I just commented on the Add Blue needed on our new Tin Can and seems more of us are required to buy the stuff at an incredible price for what it consists of.
Basically distilled water and ****. If so it's a remarkable con in more plastic containers polluting up the planet?

I find it amazing that the engine will stop if not topped up with this Add Blue. OK we get warnings although I have no idea how big the tank is or how much is in it.
Is it possible to dilute it will more distilled water? How much accuracy is recorded? Does it really do anything beneficial for our environment?

After seeing it advertised online from €18 to €58 a container, we came across it in the local and not so cheap supermarket at €12.99 for 5L.

Really? Adblue is just over £1 a litre and that gives me over 10,000 miles per litre.
That's a penny per mile.
I wouldn't risk damaging the cat and the DPF to save a fraction of pence per mile.

Yes point taken Pat but we have only seen it locally at €5 a litre so far. I also don't know how much we are likely to use in a year. But I was just wondering as I end up with gallons of distilled water from the dehumidifiers.

I found 20 litres online ne for £27
My MH holds 17 ltrs so when it does need some (probably 5 or 6 years away) I'll just by 20 litres and be done with it.
We used to have a Peugeot people carrier and that had a DPF fluid of about 3 litres and lasted about 60,000 miles I think but cost a fortune to have the dealer refill and reset.

Might not be so good given the information quoted from the ttforum

Wouldn’t mess with it by diluting as it’s not just distilled water, unless you’re prepared to damage your cat.
“AdBlue® is made of a colourless mixture of high-purity urea (32.5%) and deionised water (67.5%), as set out in the ISO 22242 standard. Urea contains ammonia; the active ingredient in AdBlue® that reacts with NOx and neutralises it before it enters the atmosphere.”
Also protect your paintwork when filling as the ammonia will damage it.
I get mine from Amazon.

I was just asking Terry. I don't go by the book if the book sounds illogical.

I think I read somewhere that when opened, a container of Adblue has a short shelf life so it's not the kind of stuff that can be left in your garage ready for the next fill up in 2 - 3 years time.

Yeah, more shelf life waste.

A quick look makes it seem to me that adblue is a great deal cheaper at the pumps than it is in containers, then there's the risk and inconvenience while decanting it and the shelf life issue.

No Jan, you don't. Its for recent diesels and usually there will be a smaller 'blue' filler cap next to the Diesel one.

Addblue is a system that sprays a mixture water and pig pee into the exhaust before the cat invertor this reduces the NOX emissions of the diesel engine its been fitted by some manufactures as a way to comply with the latest emission regulations for new engines

Ah thanks ray. Maybe we just need to mix distilled water and antifreeze. Oh just a thought as antifreeze is usually blue or green.
