Add Blue questions.

I just commented on the Add Blue needed on our new Tin Can and seems more of us are required to buy the stuff at an incredible price for what it consists of.
Basically distilled water and ****. If so it's a remarkable con in more plastic containers polluting up the planet?

I find it amazing that the engine will stop if not topped up with this Add Blue. OK we get warnings although I have no idea how big the tank is or how much is in it.
Is it possible to dilute it will more distilled water? How much accuracy is recorded? Does it really do anything beneficial for our environment?

After seeing it advertised online from €18 to €58 a container, we came across it in the local and not so cheap supermarket at €12.99 for 5L.

It an NI one Jan.
Hi Pat,

Not sure your sums are correct unless you do not do many miles. It seems the nominal amount used in my Fiat Euro 6 160 Ducato Auto should be around 5% of fuel consumption. It actually worked out on a 2600 mile trip at 4% which was a plus. I used about 20 litres on about 500 litres Diesel.

Alan
I found 20 litres online ne for £27
My MH holds 17 ltrs so when it does need some (probably 5 or 6 years away) I'll just by 20 litres and be done with it.
We used to have a Peugeot people carrier and that had a DPF fluid of about 3 litres and lasted about 60,000 miles I think but cost a fortune to have the dealer refill and reset.

There's no resetting for us to do with Adblue on our van. We just filled at a pump, 13Lt at .60€ a Lt from telling us it was empty. The van reset itself in a few minutes.

I don't understand why anyone would want to faff around with containers of it when it is clearly cheaper and easier at the pump. Can anyone put me straight on that please?

When you fill up at a pump does the nozzle fit the special inlet on the Fiat filler point (just inside the side door on mine) because that would obviously be the easiest option if it does.

Alan
Yes. I think the Adblue nozzles and filler points are standardised.

"the standardisation of the AdBlue filler neck; Relevant reasons are that:  the standardisation of the AdBlue filler neck enables the use of uniform refill bottles and pumps and therefore leads to considerable efficiency enhancements and cost savings, since for refilling AdBlue, all bottles on sale can be selected and all AdBlue pumps can be used; and  it is not apparent that standardised AdBlue filler necks have a negative impact on the effectiveness of SCR-systems."

Doubtless a trawl would find the actual European Standard but this extract shows that fillers are standardised.
17 ltrs to give 20,000 miles.

Pat,

Are these the numbers for your motorhome or something else?

Alan
I looked up the figures online. And then checked the handbook.
Mines a 2018 Peugeot motorhome.
But at the end of the day it's an anti pollutant process so to me it's important. Diesel soot particles are particularly nasty and modern vehicles reduce these and other emissions as much as they can.
If that needs adblue to work then that's what's needed. I hate to see older diesel vans driving past schools belching out smoke and fumes.
