lovely, we bought some fresh yesterday - steamed lightly, served with a poached egg. Heaven.

Hugh Fearnley whatsisname's recipe in yesterday's Guardian suggested chorizo sausages as well, but didn't have any of that

Try serving the steamed spears alongside a fresh soft-boiled egg in which to dip them. It makes a lovely light snack or impressive but simple starter.

Saw a 'pick your own' on the A21 last Saturday, must admit I was tempted to stop.
I took note of Hugh FW's 5 ways to cook asparagus - very useful .

Brie and asparargus tart

Chop brie and beat a few eggs place brie and blanched asoarargus into a plain pastry case, pour over beaten egg and bake until set season and serve with a crisp salad. Can't help with quatities found it out by accident and didn't bother to make any notes.
Sprue (sp?) is the best when you can get it.

It's bundles of much thinner grass, and is usually green for most of its length. A lot cheaper and far more tasty in our opinion.

And Huge Fernleaf Tittingstall can keep his fancy recipes, though I do like him a lot and they are usually excellent. :D

Simply boiled and dressed with lashings of pre-melted butter and rather more salt than is good for you - and eaten with thinly sliced bread and butter.

Too nice to spoil the flavour with any other ingredients.

IMO 8O

In Portugal and here in Spain the wild Asparagus is out - if you can beat the locals to it which believe me is virtually impossible!
Well, if you're partial to a bit of asparagus you need to go to Germany where they have specific asparagus holiday routes or 'Spargelstrasse' in the native tongue.

Unfortunately the links are all in German but you could always bung it through Google Translate....

Lower Saxony...

NordRhein Westfalia....

Badische Spargelstrasse around Karlsruhe...

Loads of stellplatze along the way where you can stay the night.

Guten apetite.
