I'm too old for all this nonsense.. whatever next ffs

Don’t say mother or father as it could offend, Oxfam tells staff
The global charity's new guidebook to using inclusive language also bans the word headquarters as it smacks of colonialism.

It says: “If trans parents have a preferred specified gender role, such as ‘mother’ or ‘father’, this should be respected. If unsure, it is more inclusive to use ‘parent’.”

It adds: "The important principle here is to be inclusive in the broader sense by describing people as ‘parents’, but if individual parents have a preference for a role name, to respect their choice."

Seems perfectly reasonable to me that if find yourself dealing with transgender parents and you don't know what their preference is you play safe and wait for some clues.

fair enough.. IF you find yourself dealing with trans parents ..

but I was referring to this ...

Oxfam Quote: the English language " smacks of colonialism "

Oxfam has instructed its staff to use 'parent' instead of 'mother' and 'father' in a new guide. Oxfam's inclusivity guide also calls English the 'language of a colonising nation'.

that is a load of bollox

That's an interesting thing to attempt to deny. Why do you think English is so widely spoken, not least in Scotland Jim? Did the Scots take it up because they liked the poetic possibilities or maybe it's because ¨Gaelic was introduced to Scotland from Ireland in the 5th century and remained the main language in most rural areas until the early 17th century. It was outlawed by the crown in 1616, and suppressed further after the Jacobite rebellion of 1745

Maybe just consider that so are Spanish, Portuguese, French and a good many other languages colonial languages.

I have always thought that just because you disagree with something doesn't mean that it's bollox. It's just scrotatomically different.
I don't think mothers and fathers days will be banned...............except in your worst waking nightmare.
Remember when schools realised and started referring to parent or guardian. No fuss then as far as I can recall. But now we seem to be in the last days of the dinosaurs ranting and railing about the changes they see around them..................the trans woke snowflakes will soon rule the world

Celebrating Mother's Day has been banned in some preschools and childcare centres that have renamed the occasion 'Parent' or 'Family Day' in a bid to be more 'inclusive'.

When I ran a Scout Troop we had to refer to parents and carers as some of the children were fostered or in care and didn't have parents.
Also in my work we referred to some processes as master and slave.
Clearly that's not appropriate.
Language has to evolve and adapt as it has done since it first emerged.
Using language that's kind and inclusive shouldn't be a bad thing. It should be embraced and encouraged.

I should think that people who have mothers will still celebrate Mothers Day though I can understand why it might be better not mentioned in an environment where children are present some of whom may not have a mother in their lives.

I would imagine for instance that it was never a thing in orphanages because it was simply inappropriate. What is wrong with identifying a few more places where it is inappropriate and avoiding mentioning it there too?

As Mother’s Day has been mentioned I looked up when and why there is a Mother’s Day or as I remember it, Mothering Sunday.
Says here it all started in America, fancy that.

It´s a different day in Germany even a different month.

I think we're heading for an even more confused young society, young people are killing themselves with confused gender with even just the basic two, now they will be confused as to the gender of their siblings, is it a boy, girl, other, and what happens when they go on to have their own children what will the "parents" be? mother, father, other? and the babies, boy, girl, other?

Is God still known as HE or Father or have believers change the way it is addressed.
what the Archbishop said..

"God might be gender neutral but he's still our father"
God should not be referred to using gender terms, according to the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Which of the many and varied gods are we referring to? Father Christmas or the Tooth Fairy?

Ray.
