Bilbao to Bidart, easy run?

1996 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  113016
As our first trip to France we are looking at taking the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao. Then a quick motor on to here or here.

What is the main road, or the route road like?

We've never travelled abroad before in the Murvi so I'm looking for a reasonably easy run on the first day, to get my eye in!

Any other advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Route

Hello,

The route is okay, can get busy on the two lane toll bits during peak times, even congested. Lingo posted one signs looks a bit offensive and hard to understand as it is can be in Spanish/French/Basque (its the Basque that can be confusing and a tonguetwister (but don't tell them that!)).

Portsmouth to Bilbao, expensive. Would prefer the Brittany Ferries Santander option but my numbers have not come up yet and I think my pools have run out!.

THe Bay of Biscay can be rough or you can be lucky and it be like a millpond. Look out for whales, dolphins and sunfish. Trip to the cinema for the free wildlife screening is recomended.

Happy & safe travels,
Trev.

Hi Chiily.
You aren't half doing it the expensive way considering that you intend to drive back into France
Have you looked at sailing via St Malo or even cheaper Cherbourg as you will save lots, but even these two are expensive compared to some others however the drive is a little longer.
Ah yes, cost...

Looking athe C&CC Portsmouth to Bilbao (with cabin) is around £500, we were doing the return trip Calais to Dover. The costs to St Malo and Cherbourg are both at around £450 (with cabin), again returing through Dover. So there's not a great deal in it.

However, Dover to Calias is £150, inc travel insurance!

If you have got £500 for Bilbao return, that is very good and I would snap it up. If it is one way then it is a lot!
We have paid £60 return for high season later this year Dover / Calais

In the last three years I've never paid more than £50 for a one way crossing from France to Dover, usually around the £35 mark. That's with a 6.7m coachbuilt.

The £60 for our return crossing is for 7 meter. Think we got a good price.
I have just had a quick look at Bilbao and with June dates I got between £750 & £920 return.
Obviously more looking may get better prices

Sorry Chiily, I have just noticed that your £500 is for one way and then returning via Dover.
Too expensive for me, sorry
