Hi

A major reasons we bought our MH was that as my wife has MS we wanted the mobility, freedom and easy access to on board facilities, that this gave us. It means that on a good day we can get out and about but on a crappy day we can stay put and relax.

However it would be really great if we could access sites where there are local facilities like pubs, tea rooms, restaurants etc so that when things are good, we can take a (very) short walk. Recently we stayed at a site in Cenarth, west Wales wihich was 200m to the nearest pub: perfect :) It meant that we could BBQ one night and have a night out on the second.

I am usually a bit suspicious of "5 minute walk" claims for obvious reasons (as it is usually only 5 min or so that we have).

So, is there any such compendium available? Could anyone give me some pointers?

Cheers

Graham :)

Fully recommend the plassey near Wrexham.

It's a campsite with on site bar and adjacent to a craft centre with pub with food, and cafe / ice creams etc

Also has a site shop and pool.

Not the cheapest but top quality pitches Tarmac pathways and generally very pleasant.

Recommended to us when I ran a "campsite for snobs" thread.

We're heading for Tudor caravan park, Slimbridge this weekend, its on the canal and there's a pub next to the site I understand

Tewkesbury caravan club site is right next to the town as is Cheddar caravan club site but I've not visited either personally so couldn't vouch for how short a short walk might be

White House campsite in Builth Wells is also right on the edge of town next to the river, lots of pubs, takeaways and even a cinema a short walk away

We also use Brit Stops and other pub stopovers regularly - no site fees, just spend the money on a pub meal instead

As Kay said earlier, we have stayed at The Tudors many times, you come out of the gate and you are at The Tudors pub nice food and right on your doorstep.

The site also has great very clean facilities and is very level, 2 minute stroll to the canal also.
highly recommended site from us!

Moreton in the Marsh is also flat and about 10 minutes maximum and you are in the centre of a lovely Cotswolds town.

Thanks folks :D

This is EXACTLY the kind of empiracle information I (we?) need.

I'll check out some of the other suggested links too.

I guess in a perfect world we wouldnt necessarily want to stop at a pub due to noise etc and may also not want to eat in there (which would be a bit rude!).

I may start compiling these suggestions into a Word document. Perhaps we could make this thread a sticky and add to it?

What do peeps think?

I think it is a great idea. We too like sites where I (hubby in electric wheelchair so he can manage greater distances than me - provided they don't involve flights of steps!) can wander into town/village and enjoy a meal and perhaps a glass or two without the hassle of moving the van.
I think there was a thread on this a little while ago - I will have a look and see if I can find it.

Great :D That would be v useful.

In the meantime I think I'll start a list and can easily add to it when I hear of more sites.

We have the same problem of needing easy access, lots of towns in Scotland. Melrose, Moffat, Forfar, Ayr and plenty of others. Good luck.

Do you mean all these towns do have easy access from campsites? If so have you stayed at any of the sites?

Cheers

Yes, all of the sites are in the towns themselves. Melrose site is 100 yards from the main street, Moffat is about the same. Ayr has a bus stop a five minute walk with regular buses in the town centre and Forfar's site is minutes from the main street for shops, pubs and eating places. Stay at them on a regular basis for the same reason you need easy access.

Houghton Mill Caravan Club site is a beautiful site on National Trust land, it's right next to the mill on the riverbank and the lovely village of Houghton is about 200 yards away with a really good shop and a couple of decent pubs that both do good food.

Thanks Dave: Scotland will definately be on the tour list so that makes for great info

Thanks Mel: I used to have an uncle who lived in one of the thatched cottages right next to the mill in Houghton...Uncle Roly :) ...this was 40 years ago, and he was old then so I doubt he is still there :(

Cheers

According to CC book, Houghton Mill doesn't have a MH dump point. That may affect a decision.

We have 2 CL sites in our village, both about 100m from the local pub/shop/PO and about 0.5mile from an award-winning Rural Life Museum (easy parking). However, the bus service is only limited  Parking in the local town is free for an unlimited period. Do you fancy rural Norfolk? - Gordon

If you go ahead with compiling your list, I wonder if Word is the best format?

An Excel .csv file might be better, then you could include the co-ordinates and information in a format which would import directly into AutoRoute and/or satnavs. (Conversion to ov2 for TomToms is very easy.)

For those who don't use A/R the format would be just as handy, and live URLs can be inserted to offer website information where available.

Just a thought

Dave

P.S. Where's Crencester??

Sorry - getting me coat!

INFORMATION OVERLOAD...

This thread is getting really good - thanks to all :D

Good info on Houghton - cheers :D In my own mind though I'll compile a list of places with local access and then I guess I'll have to decide what is important to me for the night (or two) that we stay there. I'm with you though...I do like dump facilities otherwise what do you do with the grey water? [I know I can take the nasty stuff home/public toliet etc]

Dave: my head just exploded

Mind you I am watching the rugby 7s on telly and having a few beers so maybe I'll try and interpret your post tomorrow

Mind you I am with you on the spelling. I am the WORST pedant going for that so a Commonwealth Gold to you for spotting it and please allow me to amend :)

Cheers
