Hi there

I have been hard at it compiling a list over the last month or two (on an Excel spreadsheet) which, if anyone is interested, I am happy to email to them. I have around 150 UK sites listed with, or near to, a pub and/or restaurant but please bear in mind:-

- I havent visited them all (yet :D ) so am having to go off 'information received' either via websites, Google maps, emails etc. There could be some 'mis-truths' in there!

- I have limited the range to 0.5mile or 10 mins which is about the max Mrs GMJ could manage on the flat, on a good day

- The list is only a couple of months old and nowhere near comprehensive so please be gentle with me!

- There is also some info on there regarding foreign sites and various articles which is info I didnt want to lose so just popped it into separate tabs

- I havent included any CLs as there are zillions of them and I just havent got around to it...

If I do send you a copy and you have been to any of the sites listed please do email me with any comments...especially regarding the distances to the pubs/restaurants etc

It does rather make us sound like a right pair of old soaks but I only did this to give us an option, honestly...especially in winter when I do less BBQing :)

Cheers

Graham :D

Fully recommend the plassey near Wrexham.

It's a campsite with on site bar and adjacent to a craft centre with pub with food, and cafe / ice creams etc

Also has a site shop and pool.

Not the cheapest but top quality pitches Tarmac pathways and generally very pleasant.

Recommended to us when I ran a "campsite for snobs" thread.
Finola you are a genius

Now if you could write a book I would buy it

I'm not a snob (I think) - but I do love my creature comforts ......... no wildcamping for me - there has to be a pub next door, a selection of places to visit, a selection of restaurants and maybe optional butler service to the pitches to refill the water and empty the thetford!

Sounds like an excellent addition to the Members Guides. I sure loads of people would be very interested, whether disabled or not. Send me a PM if you want to go that way.

Have you seen this thread which Bigcats kindly posted?

Very convenient when installed on Maps.Me. We have used three of the pubs and they were all superb. A meal for two cost about £30, so I reckon in real terms that's a fiver each - because a campsite would have been £20 and probably not as nice.

The only thing to remember is that often bars on campsites are closed off season outside the weekend

We checked a few in Derbyshire ,found one pub with a campsite that we could access with a motorhome but they did not provide meals Monday and Tuesdays , I guess that's off season too

Not a lot to do locally apart from walking or cycling, so some form of transport would be an advantage

Now that is where a caravan scores

Another to add to the list is Caister Old Hall near Great Yarmouth in Norfolk.

Years ago it used to be a caravan park but was sold off and houses built on the site but the original hall is still there and has a hard surfaced motorhome area. Its only £5 per night and you get to use the hotel facilities such as the Gym, Swimming Pool, Sauna, Jacuzzi and Steam Room in the price! Plus there is EHU for no extra cost.

Its in the town centre so other than the hotel bar there are restaurants, chip shop, shop close by.

And of course the Norfolk Broads, Yarmouth and Norwich are close by.

Caravan Club (Club Together) had a thread on this last year I think it was. There were many good suggestions - so some extras to add to your list if you can access it.

I agree with you wholeheartedly! No wild stuff for me - you never know who you might meet.

Thanks for the responses folks.

I take the point regarding off season which I why I have attempted to suggest which sites are seasonal and also the websites for each site.

I would suggest that the list is just a starting point and the website should be checked for details or a phonecall made.

We are off to a site in the Forest of Dean tomorrow which has facillities on site so I'll add that to my own list (and one near Shrewsbury in 2 weeks; and 2 others prior to Xmas too :D )

I'll add any suggestions to the list when I get less time :D

I do the same where possible

I have stayed at a couple of Britstop places but always google the location - then go onto the streetmaps to make sure I'm not booking into a pub carpark in the middle of a housing estate.

I recently stayed in Malvern at a britstop - no facilities (but then we have our own) and a perfect 14th century coaching house serving great food and a few cheeky beers

Thanks GMJ for starting such a useful thread. Only just come across it and have not really explored it yet but it's just what we need.

We bought our current van in 2006 after a break and Sue's dementia was already a significant problem then. But we've had some great trips here and abroad and the fact that she was able walk quite decent distances was, it turns out, a crucial part of it all. We could walk off into towns at will and 'explore'.

Now we can't. :(

She can still walk, which is a blessing, but it's very slow going (1.5 miles an hour at best currently), after about .25 of a mile she needs a few minutes rest and I can't ever be sure just how good or poor the walking will be on any particular day - she's had one or two falls. Add in the tendency for many sites to invite difficult walking, even to get around the site - terraced pitches, rough and uneven surfaces - and you can end up almost imprisoned in the van. Even sites that used to be suitable a year or two ago no longer are.

As sandra said earlier, this is where caravans score as you have a separate means of transport. Sometimes we do drive to eating places in the van but if you're staying for a few days it can mean a lot of packing and unpacking.

So knowing about sites where there's food and drink close by has become really important.

I will explore the the thread,

Thanks again.

Update - now over 450 sites!

Update

Hi

Through the long dark winter I spent some time updating my list of sites close to or with bar/restaurant etc and now it is up to over 450!

If anyone wants a copy please pm me with your email address. The document is on MS excel.

Usual caveats apply:-

- Please use it as a basis for your own research...don't just rely on my word :smile2:
- Please let me know if I have something wrong...especially if the facilities are not as close as claimed etc
- Please update me with any sites that you know of that are not on the list
- The list doesn't contain CLs and many sites abroad as there is only so much time and energy I can/want to spend on this
- I am happy to advise on any sites that I have stayed at...as denoted in the end column (not many as yet).

Lastly...

- If anything goes wrong don't blame me :grin2:

Cheers
