Dare I return to BT?

Looking to move from TalkTalk, after they took over Tiscali, who took over Pipex, who took over Toucan, my original ISP.

Can't go to Sky, not on their main network, and no BT line.

BT are offering £50 to Tiscali customers who don't want TalkTalk and switch to BT, so enquiries made, by phone.

First girl-brilliant, an asset to any Sales, helpful, knowledgable, and gave me prices. However £50 deal only available when ordering online

Go online, enter my e-mail address as requested to find that for some reason my Toucan address not recognised as a Tiscali customer, which I am.

Back on the phone-second girl possibly the thickest person I have ever had to deal with- and her in Sales too. Eventually she patched me thru to India  Very helpful, very nice, absolutely no joy after being on phone about half an hour.

Ohmegod - And heres me possibly wishing to order their top all inc package-Broadband, phone, and TV.

Help

hi Paul

you say you haven't got a BT line? How are you connected up via talk-talk? On a mobile line?

I have BT phone / internet/ tv (bt connect?) on my home phone line and it's fine. I've had the occasional router box problems, and they have been sorted out by them. I know now how to do a re-boot of the box if it goes off again.

:!:
Switched from Virgin to BT for phone and broadband. It cost me full price for BT installation but am happy with broadband speed and telephone service. Faults service also very good.

Hi Mike

I have the actual line, originally BT, but for the last several years my line rental has been with other providers, latterly Toucan. For some reason apparently you can only migrate your line rental to Sky from BT- or so I understand.

Was all ready to switch to BT, including having downgraded my Sky TV package, until all the aforementioned reminded me of BT's monolithic, inflexible heritage. Gave me cause to doubt, and of course I have to sign up for 18 months too.

Glad you are pleased with your BT package

Try plus.net £5.99 a month, UK call centre and owned by BT
At least there is little chance that they will go belly up like my supplier has just done - can't do much without the MAC - just got it after a week - some people using the same supplier have been waiting months
Pipex were fantastic until tiscali took them over, thats when we had to move. Plus net so far so good.

My brother in law was with tiscali and BT have charged him over £100 to change back to BT. something about connections.
I was with Orange and had terrible problems, I am now with BT for phone and broadband and am very happy. I chose the ANYWHERE tariff and got a mobile phone that is like a blackberry and free calls, texts and browsing. £29.99 a month it also has a hub and free calls after 6pm and week ends :D
Did you know that BT do this to it's customers ? To be fair though most of the big company's do, I'm with Virgin and they do it, just that not everybody know's about it...........

BT Throttle

On the suject of BT, I draw your attention to the following:

HOWEVER, it contains a couple of three sweary words, discretion is advised. I personally thought it was hilarious.
After many years of internet joy going back to the mid nineties and several business premises that move/change etc I can say that there are few that are consistent. They are bought and sold every 5 minutes. If they could keep their customer services the same it would be fine but they dont and nobody knows what's going on. The great go bad and the bad get worse.

BT have great engineers who are world class IMHO but the sales end of BT (both phone and internet) stinks (or used to when I dealt with them). In my opinion BT Customer services are the only consistent ones in the internet world....consistently bad!

Back in the early noughties I chose Biscit Internet as they won best ISP regularly with everyone. It went downhill, got passed around and became rubbish.

I agree with Clive. I went back to PIPEX who were pricey but worth it because they owned much of the backbone of UK services. Worth every penny.....until the last 2 years when they've been awful for customer services. I'm currently disputing for the second time one line I shut down with them where I paid the last installment over the phone at time of closure (dispute 1) and now they want to take me to court for the outstandng amount. Figure that one out. Sad thing is I'm still paying them for the other one in our house!

'Best ISP' is a snapshot. if you search the internet check the date of the review/opinion. It probably isn't correct if it's over 12 months old.

He certainly did not sound a happy BT customer! We have had many problems trying to get OFF their mailing list. Repeated written requests plus innumerable phone conversations seems to have achieved ------- NOTHING !

If anyone knows a way of stopping them trying to get us to go back to BT we would listen VERY carefully, we left after a prolonged series of problems where we appeared to be getting charged for "engaged" calls. In the end they made an "ex gratia" payment to cover the expense but were unable to explain what had happened. Even their call logger that they installed in our house showed that what I was saying was correct! But they still could not explain it.

We will NOT return to BT and use Talk Talk for our phone line and calls. This gives us free landline calls 24/7 and free overseas calls too. It works for us!

What a sad reflection this is of the state of this industry, stated by the Government to be of vital importance to the UK.

It appears that it is just pot luck if you happen to get good service from one of the providers, some people being well satisfied and others well miffed with the same provider.

I am furious that I keep seeing full page Sky adverts enticing people, especially Tiscali customers, to join, yet through no fault of my own I can't do it - outside their network  Despite Torbay having a bigger conurbation than Exeter, and the neighbouring exchange being within the network.

Currently my Pipex broadband is operating very well, and I have not had cause to use the back-up services, so no rush I suppose.

It looks like PlusNet is the only provider with no complaints so far, on here at least. For how long I wonder as BT now own them.

We've been with TalkTalk since we moved from Tiscali (too expensive) and we were thrown off Toucan (too many downloads  ). When we moved, there was a bit of a kerfuffle swapping our account, but the system works really well for us. Download speeds of around 4mbps, and we're a few miles from the exchange, very much at the end of the line.

We're happy with the service.

I was with them until 2005 when I moved home - they made such a gigantic b***s up of the simple transfer (same phone number and moved about 200 yards down the same road) that I was without broadband for about a month.

So I moved to Toucan, who I found excellent. TalkTalk ignored the fact that I was no longer with them, and bombarded me with bills for the next 6 months, followed by Collection Agent threats etc etc. This despite literally hours of phone calls to them, each time with promises to sort it out.

In the end I took it to Otello who eventually forced a letter of apology and a £50 payment from them - TalkTalk grew too quickly and their customer services simply could not cope.

Who knows, maybe they are better now, but it leaves a bad taste.
