If you have a Fiat motor home, that should be juddering in reverse, and costing you thousands in repairs; AND THIS IS NOT HAPPENING, would you please make a response to this thread. Many thanks John

I had this PM from Andy Stothert last week, I hope it helps John

Good morning,
The vans with the 2.3 engine and 6 speed box (Fiat) 2.2 litre and 6 speed box (Peugeot) are the ones to avoid.
As you say the lighter ones with the 2.2 litre 5 speed combintion are not nearly so bad, but some owners are not happy with those either.
But having driven all of them I'd plump for the 5 speed 2.2 and give it a proper test on a hill just to make sure you are satisfied.
Also I've not heard of any 5 speed vans wrecking either clutches or gearboxes.

Cheers
Andy

Well, I have a Fiat. One of the ones to avoid, according to Andy  (it's a six speed, 2.3l 130bhp version).

Yes, it has occasionally juddered in reverse, once quite badly on a soggy grass campsite in Holland. I was able to drive forward, and avoid it happening again. It juddered a little backing into position on a damp field at the Newbury show. I was able to reduce its effect by adjusting throttle / clutch settings.

So, yes to an occasional judder in reverse, but NO to costing me thousands in repairs, so I feel justified in responding on the thread.

We have a 3.0 and it has been ok so far.

Richard...
John....

I have a 2007 2.2l 5 speed. It judders occasionally but from descriptions given by others, nowhere near as bad as some

It seems impossible to predict under what conditions it will occur.

What model do you have?

Colin
I have had a 2.3 and now have a 3.0 neither of which have demonstrated any juddering in reverse or gear box/clutch failure.
You're a brave man to pose such a question on this forum, believe me it wont be long before the doom sayers are out and you suffer the full gambit of their vitriol toward Fiat and anybody who dares question their opinion.
Best of luck in your quest , whatever it may be!!

My 3l A-T juddered at its first outing last June.
I have had two. A Fiat 2.3 multijet and now a Peogeot 2.2 (6 speed)

Some vibration in certain circumstances in reverse but no real problem.
Currently at Tewkesbury and reversed onto wet grass without difficulty
I'm taking delivery of a 3.0 tomorrow which I tested extensively for the judder problem. Normal reversing was fine but I specifically drove it into a car park with a steep hill and then reversed it out and round a corner to try to make it judder. A worst-case test if you will.

I could make it judder but it was something I could live with. Increasing revs would probably toast the clutch after a while so I don't think that's an option. The judder was more of a resonant vibration through the motorhome body than any sort of agressive judder from the drivetrain. I concluded I could live with it as long as I'm prepared to accept that the clutch will need treating gently (as with previous Fiat commercial front-drive engines) and if I try to avoid really tricky uphill reverses in a 4 tonne motorhome which I'd probably do anyway. I didn't feel like it was stressing anything in any abnormal way.

I negotiated a nice discount with the seller to allow for this and I'll let you know if I'm happy in a few months.

HOWEVER - if it'd bought it new without this knowledge I might have been less happy. Try it and see if you can live with it but at the same time you've got to be realistic about what a 4 tonne front-drive vehicle is really capable of. It seems some are much worse than others - maybe the one I've tried is just a good one?

Interestingly I've subsequently tried the same test on my 2.8 JTD self build van which I'd never noticed any problems with in 4 years and it does it as well if you pick a really steep hill and provoke it by going slowly and keeping the revs low.

Cheers, Mark

Our 3l "Judders" alot, but I do have to reverse it quite a bit. After every trip I have to reverse it into it's place at home, no other choice.

Even if your vans only "Judder's" a little bit, or only does it now and again, it is wrong, they should not do that ever. Fiat have messed up big time with this engine and they should be big enough to put things right

I have 2007 3L and have had to put a new clutch in it
Peugeot 2.2 / 5-speed, but assume I'm welcome to contribute?

Shakes a bit, but nothing that can't be handled with a few extra revs so no worries. My first MH and if I hadn't read the copious comments on boards such as these, would have taken it as a normal characteristic of MHs to rattle when reversed.

Happy with the chassis overall...being tall and relatively wide, couldn't even fit in the old shaped cab without contorting myself. Agree with what others have said...have a lot of sympathy with those who have parted with a lot of money for vans that are shaking themselves apart and agree that they should keep up the pressure, but it really does hack me off that some seem unable to accept that this isn't a universal issue.
I have a 2001 Fiat 2.8 jtd, it judders in reverse uphill if I don't drive correctly, if you have too much clutch and not enough gas, any vehicle will judder.

This is not to disparage those who have real reversing problems with the newer Fiats, just acknowledging that the older ones will judder too, if not driven properly.

Although i rarely have to reverse when out and about, i do notice a judder when reversing into parking place at home.
The first time i noticed this was when i was trying to push the gate piller over.

Easy fix Dave either fir softer gate pillars, or look where you're going

I know it's easy to post up more or new problems encountered on the judder problem, but John wanted people to post on here when they DON'T have a judder problem:-
