Whats it like to go over to france/Netherlands for the New Year. Want to use Tesco vouchers for the tunnel. Would be from 27 - 2. Are there any meets or Rallies that time of year and would there be any sites open.

New Year before last, we went to Belgium and France between Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Did not use campsites but plenty of Aires available. We stopped in Bruges (now expensive aire) then Ghent, Antwerp and Tournai free of charge. Then back to St Omer for New Year's Eve in an outstanding restaurant. No aire there so we parked in a town centre car park. No problems and no-one bothered us (although we did have a rousing New Year welcome from some local youths on our way back from the restaurant). The only thing to beware of is that not all the 'Bornes de Service' are operational in mid-winter so you may have to search around for a place to dump and replenish. Again this is not a problem if you use locations close to towns rather than villages.

p.s. we have 2 x 110 Ah batteries and seldom use hook-up, but realise this may be a bigger issue for you. We can last 3 or 4 nights without re-charging even in depths of winter (no solar or gennie).

we went last christmas down to the loire and accross to the atlantic coast for new year, stayed on the aires no problems and plenty people about enjoying the crisp winter weather [-10 to -12 at night]

you use plenty of gas for the heating and as we have plenty battery power and solar dont need mains electric , which is just as well as the only sites open that I know of are the ski resorts in the Alps and pyrenees.

basically just go and follow the open road as you will always finnd somethig interesting be it a chateau or ski resort in full flow

Thanks all, Never thought about snow chains. We are going over in July, to Germany, well thats the plan. Using Seafrance through CCC. Not sure how tedious the journey from N Wales is going to be. Coming back from Cornwall at Easter in a oner wasn't good. The aim is to do an overnight for this and for New Year if it goes to plan.

I was looking at the tunnel and I could get there and back using our current tesco vouchers. Haven't thought out properly where we want to go. Have flown over to Amsterdam on several occasions and thought maybe there but then all the info on France on here makes it sound really good and a must.

Please keep the ideas coming.

We are going 19th Dec till 3rd Jan also but are doing ski slopes have detailed itinery from fellow mhf'er. But wanted to move on after week on slopes so will see how it goes. We can carry enough gas now to last all the time even though ours is a bit of a gas guzzler.

Batch does a good website for skiing with a mohome can't find linkage now am sure someone will be along soon with it.

We can't make up mind whether to go down to Spain for warmth or stay up north for snow - decisions decisions!

I went over last year stopping at Bruge ,15euros inc elect off season.Antwerp on the docks for free then up to Amstrdam the nearest site for town centre is http://www.campingzeeburg.nl/ which is 15 mins by bike to centre and also good for tram link but they did change the peak period last year to incude xmas which i thought was a rip off as the site was empty (maybe because of price )went from 15 euro to 26 euro a night .
