If the price of fuel keeps going up it will just about put me out of the motorcaravan lifestyle. As I read the posts in this forum and magazines it doesn't seem to slow anyone down. They just seem to buy bigger vehicles.

Lets get real folks; it's an expensive alternative to hotels and tents. I guess in reality one has the choice to spend his money on fuel to support his addiction or stay home and read the travel brochures.

For once, after I've taken out a second mortgage to fill up my MC, Id like for a pretty girl from the oil company to come out and give me a big kiss.

Then I could have a nice drink really be satisfied

Any thoughts on this subject

Actually, price of fuel is just one reason to go over the water -
but, what kinda gas guzzler you driving - we have diesel 2.4 VW, previously 1.9 Fiat and did better than 30! is that not good? :?

Compared with cars on a size/weight ratio the vans dont do that bad. The VW T5s can quite easily do 35mpg (2.4/2.5TD engines)when driven carefully, say 60mph top gear motorways. My Boxer wont quite do that but I can achieve 30 mpg with careful driving similar conditions. I also think the vans are more enjoyable to drive, being higher you see over hedges etc and see the countryside. Insurance is generally cheaper than cars, of similar engine size and think of the pleasure we get from our P&Js.

As most of motorhome use is in France fuel costs are only a small part of the equation. Also you are really talking about the difference in cost between a car that you would be driving if you weren't driving the motorhome.

The biggest cost factor for us in the controlable expences is the cost of ferries (I feel a rant coming on, must go and lie down in a darkened room).

Can anyone tell me my MPG ?

I can drive from Dover to Fishguard on one tank of diesel, from fuel warning light to fuel warning light. The cost of a tank refill is £55 and my GPS says I've travelled 531 Km. I don't know how to work out the MPG. (Miles per Gallon).

Unfortunately, I'm at work in a major financial institution in the City in London and everyone in this office is baffled by my question. The accountant guy keeps giving me answers in litres per kilometre (totally accurate but completely useless information) and the economist across the desk tells me to drive below 60mph (good advise but doesn't answer the question). I am assured that the British economy is in good hands.....but....

What's my MPG ?

Diesel costs 79p per litre here.

Hi Drifter...... here you go:

£55.00 / £0.79 = 69.6litres

1litre = 0.22 gallons = 69.6 x 0.22 = 15.3gallons

1km = 0.62miles = 531 x 0.62 = 329.2miles

So therefore 329.2 / 15.3 = 21.5MPG

531 kilometres = 531/8x5 = 331.9 miles

£55 / 79 = 69.6 litres

69.6 /4.546 = 15.31gall

331.9/15.31 = 21.68mpg

Check that error please someone!

Apasher: I use 5/8 to convert kilometres to miles (a rough conversion). We are very used to working that way as we drive along in France converting signpost distances to miles for checking elapsed distance on the mileometer.

does the charging of the leasure battery make much difference to MPG?? I havent noticed any.

I wonder what the comparison is between empty water tank and fully charged Lbattery and a full water tank and discharged Lbattery

BTW our chuggs does about 32.5mpg :toothy7: a 1.9tdi VW T4

so, what was the question again?
But, your fuel consumption does seem high Drifter, what are you driving, and what is your load?
We generally only put 40 litres in at a time [that's about 9 gallons] [except when coming back into the UK] and only ever half fill the fresh water tank and make sure waste water is empty. Also we don't have anything on the roof.
You best consumption should come from steady sensible driving speeds, [where sensible is based on cruising speed of the vehicle - but would be 50 - 60] and therefore should come from motorway driving providing you keep within the 50 60 mark. :wink:
There is personal driving style, I am heavier footed than hubby!
Speaking of load, remember to check your vehicles weight from time to time! 8)
