Generator etiquette

Out with the motorhome near Loch Lomond at the weekend, wild camping. Found a lovely spot up above Aberfoyle in a parking area near the forests, when I arrived there were only two other camper vans. We were all about 100m away from each other and it was lovely and peaceful. Then a 4th campervan arrived, and parked about 25m from our van, not a problem in itself, but at 5pm he drags out a generator and fires it up. Now I'm as tolerant as the next man, so I give him the benefit of the doubt and assure my wife he'll be charging his batteries and it will only be a nuisance for an hour or so, but I did note the Goohilly sized satellite dish errected on his roof!
11pm came and went and still it was puttering away, we'd gone to bed. At 11.30 pm after over 6 hours of this torment, I was forced to dress and go over and knock on his door. I asked him, very politely, "will you be running the genny all night?" to whit his reply was, just another 10 minutes... At 10 to midnight it was turned off. We would have moved on if it hadn't turned off, but is it fair to arrive at a peaceful spot where others are already camping and fire up your genny for so long...

Please, Mr Irish motorhome owner with Betty Boop on the side of your van, if you are reading this, consider your fellow campers a bit more, some would simply add sugar to your petrol tank or throw the said genny off the mountain under such inconsiderate behaviour.

No picture???????????? :D
I wouldn't have waited that long, I think you were very tolerant, and he was very ignorant. Generators can be very useful, but users should be aware of other people around them. They are intrusive especially in a "quiet" area like where you were. No need for it. 8O
Ah... Didn't think of that...
A picture of the offender would have been good, but you can't miss him. There's a 2ft high cartoon of betty boop on the nearside overcab portion and a 6ft high betty boop cartoon on the rear offside of the motorhome. Can't really miss it, he'll be up around north East of Loch Lomond I guess
I wish everyone would get a Solar Panel
Some Generators are quiet while running but some are not.
11pm is the rule though--- but I suppose there must have been something good on the telly
I have seen that van at a show!

Perhaps we should have a lynching party ready for Pickering?

Now I am not taking sides however!

11 O'clock is the rule! Who's rule?

Sugar in the petrol tank? and then your camper smashed with a sledge hammer? Would either be acceptable?

Who had the right to be there? Any of you? If so who had more right?

The thing is as I see it, some people have dogs that annoy me some have kids that annoy me, some people have voices that annoy me, motorbikes, quads, smelly BBQ's noisy BBQ's some people play instruments badly, (and loudly) some cook food that stinks, some people stink, some spread out all their stuff all over my pitch, some people play their radios too loud....It goes on and on

The truth is that from time to time my dog may be a nuisance, my kids may have been naughty from time to time, we have set fire to our BBQ's in the past and made a mess, we have got loud when drunk, well you see my drift!

Wild camping is just that! No rules! No one telling you what to do IMO sure from time to time a knob head (2ft Betty Boop remember LOL  ) will run a generator until mid night but he may have been watching his only child receive an award on MTV or some other momentous event in their lives

Yes Eddie, but why when I park at the far end of an empty field to be as far away from everybody else as possible does the next one to enter park right alongside then start the bkl...y generator.

EFOY for the price of a HONDA would be good.

Sorry Eddievanbitz, but "no rules" ???
So sacrificing a goat is OK, beating someone up, murder or rape, no rules... OK I'm the same, too loud at a BBQ, maybe TV on too late, but heck I get embarassed about it.
I'm amused at your tone, especially when you still refer to n*b heads at the end, funny and stops us all getting too uptight.
I did think maybe he had a portable dialysis machine or something, but my medical friends assure me 6 hours would be excessive.
I figure that the last "10 minutes " he needed was becuast it was after the 11pm watershed on TV!!

11pm is a rule of consideration of your neighbour surely.
I do agree that people annoy dueing the day with all sorts of noise but
All Generators must be shut off by 11pm without exception in all campsites and noise must be kept at a level so as not to annoy, so why not when you are wild camping IF! you have neighbours.
If you are on your own then Hey Ho! it doesn't matter.  have a great noisy time.
I re-iterate that I am not taking sides!

Can some one point me in the direction of the 11 O'clock rule?

If there is, there will probably be one about annoying laughs or body odour

Eddie
People do not think of others these days.
Last week we were in Malia on Crete, known for the 18 - 30 brigade.
We were woke up every morning at around 5 o clock by the over 50 brigade. Oh and the flamenco dancers upstairs a bit later.

Hi Eddie I googled Caravan and Camping here are the rules of Old Farm but any site has similar rules

Rules of the site (extracts from!):
Children should be under the supervision of their parents or guardians at all times. The site is on a working farm and we do take every care to ensure that hazards are kept to a minimum but still ask that you keep a close eye on children of all ages.

Noise must be kept to a reasonable level at all times. This particularly applies to radios, televisions and other audio equipment. All Club Sites close at 11.00pm when noise should be at a minimum. Vehicle movement is prohibited on Site between 11.00pm and 7.00am.

Pitches are normally available from 12 noon on the day of arrival and pitches should be vacated by 12 noon on the day of departure. If the pitch is not required immediately, customers may stay until 5pm in consultation and agreement with Old Farm.

All property and refuse must be removed before vacating the pitch.

It is important for members to respect and protect the Club Sites by working in harmony with neighbours, the local community, the environment and by observing and respecting each other's privacy.

It is the responsibility of members to ensure the mains electrical cable from the hook-up point to their unit and the unit's installation are safe. All units should be protected by a Residual Current Device (RCD). For tent campers, this should be incorporated into a purpose-made mains supply unit designed for tent camping conditions.

Campfires are not allowed. All barbecues must be purpose-built and portable, standing clear of the ground. There must be no possibility of damage to the ground.
It is the pet owner's responsibility to clean up after their pet.

Generators may be used at the discretion of Old Farm and should not be used after 11.00pm or before 7.00am. If generators are causing a disturbance, customers may be asked to refrain from using them.
Vehicle drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists are required to respect the 5mph speed limit.

Those rules are for a campsite!
Hi Mavis , surely wild camping does not fall into camp site rules.

As I said it is a rule of respect and wild camping is different if you have no neighbours--- but surely you would respect a neighbours right to peace and quiet in the countryside  as that is why we wild camp  to listen to the sounds of nature not man.

No Im just trying to show there are many rules in a campsite 8O
Im not getting it across very good am I that we wild camp to get away from the rules but if there are some others then the rule of respect must come into it ----Help
I would just get everyone out in the open and hand round the drink and have a good sing song (ask them at Hamble Monday night  )
It is only our perception of respect.

The only poin that I am making is that when wild campin you have to put up with the rough and the smooth as there are no rules. It is wild camping. The word wild does not refer to quiet or uncivilised, just no rules.

Some will get along just fine others won't.

There is of course though no 11 O'clock rule despite what people think
Hi Mavis my dear,
you me and many more will agree with you. It is the selfish minority that spoil things for the rest of us ie noisy neighbours, burglars, barking dogs, screaming kids, drunken yobs, speeding cars motorbikes etc.
Sadly we have to put up with these selfish individuals.
I have never used a genny but have owned one for over 20 years and gave it away last month.

i hope you were not singing after 11  lol
