New to the site and wishing for some advice. I have the opportunity to buy a 1999 Peugeot Boxter autosleeper with a talisman fibre glass body. Good condition inside and out. 44,000 miles with a 2.0 petrol. Loads and loads of history. I have a question regarding the mots. It passed the last 2 with no issues but the previous few to that had the following: From 2021. I am a little worried as I do not really see any evidence of welding or of significant rust. Dealer says it was sorted but I am not so sure. Advice please

  • Nearside Front Upper Suspension component mounting prescribed area damaged but not considered excessive (5.3.6 (a) (i))
  • Nearside Front Subframe mounting prescribed area damaged but not considered excessive (5.3.6 (a) (i))
  • Offside Front Subframe mounting prescribed area damaged but not considered excessive (5.3.6 (a) (i))
  • Front Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Offside Front Brake hose has slight corrosion to ferrule (1.1.12 (f) (i))
What are advisories?

Are you a competent mechanic, fabricator and welder?

The two MOT's from May 2021 seem to have a different list of advisories. I wonder if it was taken to a more "tame" MOT centre. Check, see if it was the same place.

if all that work has been carried out then presumably there will be invoices to prove it. Even if they did it themselves there will be a record.

On a van of that age you need to be sure its sound and it looks like its at the stage where a fair bit of work has been needed or worse, soon will be needed. Im not mechanical either so if it were me I would be asking someone who is to have a look at it and give me their impartial opinion.

I would. It might be a buy for a competent mechanic looking for a project. Underbody repairs are awkward and dirty and you may need to pay well to get anyone to do them. The kind of workshop that would have a lift probably wouldn't want that sort of work.

Do you think I should walk away?
Maybe. My van is a 1996 Kontiki and my garage a couple of years back said it needed a lot of welding work for the MOT. They refused to do the work themselves. Washed their hands of it. I found a proper old school welder / mechanic and he did it all. Cost me £1500 to get it through its test but he said apart from the stuff he had to do it was really good underneath so now he reckons it should be sound for a good while yet. I guess the point is, you need someone like him to say yay or nay. The issues you will face as Alan says is getting someone to do the work if its needing doing. I think reading that lot, I would be tempted to walk away.
