Unfortunately for me it's that time of year again.
Rang a number of companies, best quote for the VW, so far, was caravan club at £295, best to deal with by far was Comfort at £349.
European cover varied from £49 to £101, am now waiting for their written quotes to check the small print.
If you add the two items together CC and Comfort work out about the same.
Decision time next week, after the magnifying glass has done its work

Enough is enough the hunt is over :? so if you've nothing better to do you can see some comparisons. Finally decided to stay with MCIA, mainly because Comfort want to fix mileage - but, when /if we move to York, the quotes are dropping by up to 1/3.

Insurance quotes: Full Comprehensive; VWT4 2.5 TDi; Bilbo campervan conversion; Thatcham Cat I alarm; RHD; c.£35k; 2 drivers clean licence; full no claims + protection; garaged at home address;

Caravan Club [use Equity]£2000 personal effects; 60 days Continental use- verbal info only no written details! - never managed to get much written details for Mhomes! 1st quote £294 2nd £314.

Comfort [use Norwich] £2000 personal effects and camping equipment [max £250 per item] can be increased to £5000;; 12 months Continental use;.- hire car for no fault claim. mileage limit 8000, includes cover for gas explosion. 1st quote £350 2nd £360 incr to 10,000 miles

MCIA [use NIG] £2000 personal effects; £1000 t tent awnings; 12 months Continental use- apply for Green Card for 1st trip then go as u please.- hire car for no fault claim. 1st quote £365 2nd £328. existing insurer looking to match lower quotes.

MotorCaravanWise [use NIG]£2000 personal effects; Green Card available period not stated; hire car for no fault claim. £365

Saga [Saga] £1,500 personal effects [max £100 per item]; £500 t tent, gas cylinders; max of £1,500 awnings, up to £700 TV or audio [max £350 per item] 60 days Continental use- hire car available.£365

Considerable discrepancy on what is meant by 'Social Domestic Pleasure', excludes attending part time college courses for CC, MCW and Saga. MCW and Saga refused cover for 'commuting'.
There were numerous errors in details sent back from most firms, so double check all documentation and negotiate, both Comfort and MCIA improved their quotation, CC charged extra £20 'cos 1st quote based on 2.4 engine!
Comfort were easiest to deal with, and also look to offer good, linked deal with house insurance.
Check cover is what you want, I tried to swap unlimited European cover for unlimited mileage with Comfort as this would be more appropriate for us, - no deal unfortunately, but always worth a try.

Breakdown cover not taken but best deal available from Comfort with MCIA 2nd.
Also contacted C & CC - similar to CC but at £348!, and Safeguard following Dodgers post similar to Comfort and MCIA, but they were confused about the commuting element.

roll on next january

of the firms I spoke to only Comfort and MCIA seem to think it an unexceptional option. perhaps they think we all have A class. 8)

Hi Mick come and join us!
not had any dealings with Adrian Flux, in fact never heard of them before today! - but they seem to have picked up some positive feedback. They seem to specialise in the 'unusual' and it may be that they have just started looking at motorhomes - moving in from their 'classic car' policies perhaps.
The issue really is whether the new or non-motorhome specialists can provide the very specific cover required - gas bottles, awnings, contents, sound system TVs etc. time abroad, limited mileage policies always seem a contradiction in terms if you're looking to spend any time abroad in the 'van. I don't think we've had any full trips of less than 1500 miles, and we often don't manage to get that far!- easily sidetracked
So a couple of those, plus an average of 100 miles a week, blows the 8000 max that most firms go for.
But, if you go for it let us know what you think, the more info the better!

give NFU Louth a try

When we were looking to insure several expensive vehicles (none of which we ended up buying thankfully!) the ONLY people who could help were NFU Louth on 01507 600249

We are 27 and 25 years old respectively and they insure our new 24 foot Eura Mobil for full-time use, both driving and with 3 months in Europe for £550.

Give them a try, ask for Helen, and her Ben Tristem sent you!

Eu quotes comparision

Finally sorted Vehicle Insurance, Breakdown Recovery and Travel Insurance in readiness for our longtiming travel abroad from this summer. I give details below as I know there has been some discussion and interest around this. The vehicle is a Fiat Ducato 2500TD Frankia motorhome; 6.83m length and max laden weight 4,000kg. We need EU cover for periods longer than 6 months. Quotes are for comprehensive EU vehicle insurance with full NCD protected, with or without breakdown recovery, as indicated:

CARAVAN GUARD: £ 354; These are our present Insurers but max EU vehicle insurance cover for 180 days only so no good. UK breakdown included but EU cover only 180 days. Mileage limit 7,000 (could be extended). Equipment cover £3,000, better than most.

COMFORT: £707. A good, all round policy. EU vehicle and insurance and breakdown cover with no time limit and, importantly for us, no weight restriction, (via RAC). However, becomes more expensive than other options once Travel/Medical insurance added on (via Carefree, see below).

SAGA £246: UK and EU comprehensive vehicle cover, no time limit. Unlimited mileage. Will not do EU breakdown.

MCIA £254: Same limits as SAGA. Approx mileage limit 10,000.

Note 1: We found it quite difficult to get Travel/Medical insurance for long periods at a reasonable cost.
Note 2: We have a scooter on board in MH garage. I gave up trying to get the scooter covered, so it only has min'm legal cover after 45 days abroad - if it gets nicked after that, tuff!

RED PENNANT: (Travel and Breakdown) £498 for 248 days EU breakdown and Medical, but restricted up to 3.8T (£150 supplement for over 3.8t) - too expensive.

FINAL CHOICE: MCIA vehicle insurance (We had a MH insured with them over 10 years ago, and had a claim which they dealt with no problems). We are combining this with Caravan and Camping Club's Carefree EU Motoring and Travel/Medical insurance in 2 parts. Initially for a 2 month period (£131 excl Spain) during Aug-Oct for our 'shakedown cruise'. Then a 183 day Annual/Multitrip period Nov-April (£205 inc Spain). TOTAL COST = £590.
When we return to UK next spring we shall take UK breakdown cover with RAC Arrival, £95, which covers for MH, car and scooter.

We have P&O shares and so got a Dover/Calais return crossing, midweek, night, out on 24Aug return 13Oct, for £113.

Hope this helps, see you over there?

Quotes recieved on 1st motorhome = £1100 from Comfort, £726 from Adrian Flux ... £487 from NFU Louth as recommended above by Ben 8O

Admittedly the NFU quote only cover £250 for personal belongings but then the £2000 from Comfort or Adrian Flux doesn't really cover everything I would need to replace should the worst happen & I lose the van with all my stuff in it. Other than that the cover is identical & only with £100 excess!!! Now I'm gonna have a chat with myself about the contents cover - I'm planning on getting a serious alarm on the van & don't have current home contents insurance so I may take the risk...

I'm with Adrian Flux because they're one of the few who insure conversions. They also deal with older vans - mine's 18 years old and the insurance is £240.
