Just how many bottles can I bring back (legally)?

I know it's a bit like the proverbial piece of string but what's the general feeling about the maximum number of bottles (per person) that could reasonably be classed as "for personal consumption"?

I've googled around but nobody seems willing to commit to a number.

I have a "feel" for 50 bottles but I could be way out.

Do you reckon 50 identical bottles is more likely to be considered as going to be resold rather than 50 different ones?

A whimsical friend of mine reckons it's all about tyre flatness - if your tyres are bulging you have too many. :)

Do we have any Revenue members on board?

ps - I may not have made myself clear to all - it's wine I'm talking about. :D

Hi Tony found this

Duty Paid Guidance
(Per person)

•3200 cigarettes
•400 cigarillos
•200 cigars
•3 kg of smoking tobacco
•110 litres of beer
•10 litres of spirits
•90 litres of wine
•20 litres of fortified wine (such as port or sherry)

In theory there is no limit if it is for personal consumption

Just check what free payload you have

I doubt you'd be in trouble for 50 bottles 8)

Duty in the UK is now £19.26 per 9 litre case (12 x 75cl bottles), so in effect you're only robbing the state of about £80.00 + the vat due on the cost of the wine.

Can't see this having too great an effect on the public purse!
As many as you want.

But you have to drink them first :p
Compare the UK prices and French prices before you buy any ( eg via Tesco or Sainsbury's Calais or Auchan website) and you might not want to bring any back at all.

Not such a difference - if any- in price when we came back 3 weeks ago.

The wine I like is a Bergerac which has been on sale in both Auchan and Carrefour for the last two years between €1:17 and €1:19.

I find the French wines on sale in the likes of Tesco are the ones they can't sell in France, are tasteless and overpriced but then we all like different things - just as well.

Apart from anything else, I hate Tesco with a passion :)

My goodness ! There's a sweeping statement !

I'd encourage you to download their pdf file of current stock - changes weekly- and check against the Auchan /Carrefour and files from other sources- local wine merchants for example.

Tonyt,
Dont hate Tesco's as they will soon have world domination. Give in.
Calais is not the best place to buy wine. They like to make a killing with U.K. day trippers who think they are getting a bargain. Travel inland to a super-market that caters for the locals.

............ and what a sad day that will be.
Don't buy in Calais, the prices are higher than anywhere else in France.
