Good afternoon all. Some of you may remember that a few weeks ago whilst touring France I had problems with 5th gear dropping out.(2005 2.2 ltr HDI Peugeot based van). We managed to finish our holiday thanks to good advice from various folk on this forum. Last week I had a word with our local mechanic who after making some phone calls to his parts supplier has quoted me around £600.00 to fix the problem. £450.00 of this is for the parts. The motorhome has only done around 35000 miles and what concerns me is that now that Ive retired I will be doing more and more yearly mileage, so how long will it be before the same problem reoccurs? If its something that is going to happen every 3 years or so it makes me wonder if its worth holding onto the van.

If you like the van then keep it, it's eleven years old, £600 to fix, if it lasts the same time again, I'll let you work out your costs, (0.5p per mile) compared with selling up, (losing money) travelling to find another you like, if you can find one that's worth buying, having to spend upwards of £10k to get past the later models gearbox problems 2009 onwards.

What van is it in case you decide to sell it

As a matter of interest have you asked your local/nearest Pug dealer to quote you for the job as well, as that is an estimate if he has said "around" £600. You need a quote/fixed price.

There were other posts running while you were away about problems with 5th gear on 2.8Jtd engines, which were the result of lack of lubrication to that gear since it is in an additional housing.

Your gearbox may be different or it may be a similar problem. If it is similar the remedy found was to increase the quantity of oil in the gearbox - I just had mine increased to the Fiat suggested 2.7lt. - they had changed the quantity about the time of my MH build.

I mention this, because if that were a similar remedy to prevent reoccurence, then you would not need to consider changing the MH.

The fellow who does most of the work on my vehicles is very good, not particularly cheap, but always does a first rate job. He swears like a goodun but always lets me know if there is any further problems before carrying on. He has pulled me out of the smelly stuff on more than one occasion.

If you go to a main dealers you will probably be looking at at least double what your local spanner-twiddler has quoted. £150 labour isnt a lot and has to include all of his overheads, I would take his hand off !!!!

I think Nick's (OP) concern is not the current quote as much as the possible problem recurring.

It would be good if he could identify the reason for the failure and any remedy.

I suggest you search on the Peugeot and Fiat forums to see what you can dig up on the problem with your engine/gearbox.

Its certainly a well known issue that has afflicted many owners in the past. By the sounds of it Fiat recognise the problem and have come up with a way of combating it by adding a bit of extra oil so that sufficient gets splashed around during use to keep the relevant components lubricated.

That is true on the 2.8jtd 1995-2005(?), as I posted above, and have acted upon myself, but is it the same for the 2.2 HDI (2005) that the OP has?

After explaining the problem the workshop manager said that without stripping it down, of coarse, he couldn't give me a definate quote but he thought at least a thousand quid. Their hourly rate is, sharp intake of breath, £68.00 an hour.

I was thinking the same, some local garages charge that sort of figure, the main dealers do have to provide a lot that others don't of course, the special tools alone must run into thousands, not to mention the weekly wage bill, salesmen stood around.

An interesting article here Nick. It's a couple of years old so prices will be a bit out but suggests you could make a saving on the quoted price.
