Melamine cups

We bought a lovely set of melamine cups recently, but all four of them have cracked and had to be thrown away. Unfortunately, we didn't read the instructions properly and don't know if boiling water could be put straight into the cup.

We don't want to use water which has gone off the boil as we like our tea very hot.

Has anyone else had problems like this??????

I cannot answer your question, as I love my cup of tea so much that I would not tarnish it in a melamine receptical.
We gave up on them after trying to remove tea stains every couple of weeks. We've got MHF china mugs now, and a couple of spare cheap china ones for guests

No, we have also put boiling water in and they are still OK after 18 months. Tea does seem to stain them and we havn't found a way to get the stain off. Dropping them on concrete does seem to damage them though. I dropped one on the way to the washing up hut a few weeks ago and we now only have three :(

Hi keith

I am really annoyed now as ours have only been used a couple of times. :x Wonder if it was a faulty batch?

Yes possibly, a cup should be designed to take boiling water. Ours didn't come with any instructions as they were bought from one of the motorhome shows, the Western one I think. We bought the plates and bowls at the same time.

Cannot stand the taste of tea from a melamine cup.

You didn't put them in a microwave, did you? Melamine is not suitable for microwaves.
We've had our set for probably 10 years and apart from cleaning the cups with neat bleach (thoroughly cleaned in dishwasher afterwards) to remove stains, we've never had problems.

No I have never put them in the microwave as I was afraid they would melt. I wish I hadn't thrown them away now as I could have took them back to the shop. I've still got the plates though.
Another lesson to be learnt I think.
I think there are 2 types of Melamine. The older kind that has been around since the 60s, is quite thick and heavy and will withstand anything including boiling water and the thinner, much lighter, cheaper ( Chinese ?) stuff that cracks easily. The latter has not been around very long.

If you've got the latter then I'm not surprised it's cracked. It's basically not a lot more substantial than disposable picnic ware. I bought a big salad bowl last week costing £1.95 but I wonder if it will last the summer.

I think a lot of us use china mugs for tea and perhaps dinner plates as well ( you can heat them up so don't have cold plates) It surprises me how well they last.

"Melamine receptical" - LMAO!

I have to say, easier and cheaper to buy cheapo mugs from ASDA etc and chuck 'em out as and when!

Tea made in a cup? - a melamine one at that?? uurrgghhh! 8O
Tea tastes better made in a teapot and drunk from a nice thin china cup.
