I think there are 2 types of Melamine. The older kind that has been around since the 60s, is quite thick and heavy and will withstand anything including boiling water and the thinner, much lighter, cheaper ( Chinese ?) stuff that cracks easily. The latter has not been around very long.
If you've got the latter then I'm not surprised it's cracked. It's basically not a lot more substantial than disposable picnic ware. I bought a big salad bowl last week costing £1.95 but I wonder if it will last the summer.
I think a lot of us use china mugs for tea and perhaps dinner plates as well ( you can heat them up so don't have cold plates) It surprises me how well they last.
