Chris needs something to help him be more mobile. Daughter has been on the case and come up with a couple. This one seems a good one for Chris's needs. We will not be motorhoming again so he just needs something to get up to the village shop or down the bridle path. It would be good to be able to take it to country shows etc too.

Then there is this trailer though not sure it will be suitable for the Invader. I expect there are others though?

Blimey! That actually looks like it will be a lot of fun! three speed modes also, 4, 8 and 16mph. Imagine tearing round Tescos on that! :D

I wonder if you could get one that takes a pillion. I reckon you will need a proper trailer for it though. Looks a good bit of kit.

Ooops, did not look at the dimensions. Just need to consider that I might be doing the driving. I am sure I could learn to reverse a trailer though. If I got stuck he would sort it out. It is very expensive but he got compensation for the asbestos damage to his lungs so I have persuaded him to use it. The idea is for him to resume coming out on our dog walks around all the footpaths and bridleways. We could also go to country shows with it etc.

Frustratingly they dont say how much it weighs but I imagine it will be heavy. Less so if you can lug the batteries out of it. I know Armitage Trailers new Scooter rack is supposed to be adaptable to take a mobility scooter but I would be wary of that other rack posted if its purely a towbar rack as Ill bet the weight of that scooter is way over the nose weight limit of any towball.

Armitage do all sorts of trailers also. Might be worth speaking to them Mobility Scooter Transporter Trailer | Yorkshire, UK

Trouble is with a fixed axle small trailer they will be almost impossible to reverse with which is why a rack would be better but then you have all the payload issues.

Might chat to the people that sell them to see how they transport them. They do offer to bring them to you. As we, now, have to sell the van and the VW Amorok then it will release funds to buy something suitable.

So will you be buying another motorhome? There may well be one with a suitable garage that will take that scooter. I think some are rated to 200kg. Ask them for the weight with and without the batteries. Might be worth finding out if the batteries are removable and how heavy they are.

Pat

There is a MHer on one of the other forums (Wildcamping or Motorhomer) called CamperVanAnnie, and she has a decent size 3 wheel mobility scooter which she uses. In fact there was a write up about her in one of the Club magazines the other month too.

If you want Pat, I am more than happy to start a conversation with her and see if she can throw her experiences your way? She comes across as a very nice lady so would be glad to help I think.

Just PM me your email address Pat and I'll drop her a line.

Barry, they are dropping hints that Chris should not be driving. If we got another motorhome it would be a small one that a short a&se like me could drive for just days out. I don't sleep well and a small van just does not work for us on longer trips.

Graham that sounds good I will pm you.

Sorry to hear that. If you get something smaller, maybe not much bigger than a car reversing a trailer will probably be easier then.

Honda brought out 3 wheeled ATVs and they are now really rare as they were inherently unstable and that is why they are all four-wheeled now, they are fine in a straight line but I'd be very wary of any on the rough or cornering.

Bit like the Reliant Robin then :) Chris is very unlikely to be cornering at speed. He just wants one to get him out of the house and around the local area. In time we will do some research on a trailer so that he can go further afield. Mobility scooters are often available for hire at certain events though.

We settled on this one Supersport. It is the one recommended by Graham's contact who is a motorhomer with disabilities. She has upgraded to one herself which she got second hand on Ebay. Top speed is 8mph. It is road legal where you are allowed to go at 8mph. If travelling on pavements there is a 4mph setting. Chris upgraded the battery and had the tyres protected. You have to register them with the DVLA but there is no road tax to pay. Insurance is not compulsory (!) but they have given us the name of a company they use.

The sales lady did comment that people choose them so that they feel a bit trendy :)

Another point to put out there is that they are not weather proof. I am off to ask Anne about that. I assume a shower is not going to hurt them? It is to do with the 'lectrics in the steering column. As our garage is not built yet we are going to try to get a ramp made to get it indoors. Once the landscaping has been done we should have that all in place but for now it will have to be a wooden one.

As luck would have it we visited a large Tesco, to get cup of tea, and they had mobility scooters to borrow. Chris borrowed one and was able to do a tour of the aisles with me :)

The electrics should be okay, Chrome may not be the best quality, but a wet seat is unpleasant, as it riding in the rain, make sure there is somewhere to put stick or crutched if the time comes for them, I borrow scooters etc at National trust places so have gained a little experience, not much but made aware of some odds n sods.

Do they sell a cover that can be rolled up and carried on the scooter Pat? If not it may be worth investing in one (and a couple of bungee cords) in case you are out and about and want to stop somewhere where the scooter can 't be taken.

Funny you should say that, Graham, as I was expecting the sales lady to launch into a whole list of "extras" that we could add on. Apart from puncture prevention and an upgraded battery she did not mention anything like that. When I got home we looked into it and, yes, they do all sorts of covers and canopies along with walking stick holders and armrest bags etc. She didn't even try to "sell" us insurance. She just mentioned that it was advisable. I had to ask for the company they use.

I wonder if I can go slightly off topic for a second.

Does anyone have a clip or something that goes on a stick so it can hang off a table in a cafe etc, seen some online but they're a bit odd looking.

I am surprised to hear a mobility scooter that costs £7k is not weather proof! Is that the case with all of them? Our brand new Honda scooter got completely soaked and filthy on the way down to the Cotswolds this week so if its getting carried outside on the back of a vehicle its going to get wet and dirty so a cover would be essential.
