They are electric, Barry, and the electric components are on the steering column. I cannot believe that they are not waterproof either but I think they are just covering their backs against people who store them outside. They had the same model as ours outside the showroom and it was raining. No one moved to take it in or cover it up at all. I will bring it up with the lady who has been motorhoming with hers for about seven years. She had her motorhome converted so I assume it is in the garage a lot of the time.

I wonder if I can go slightly off topic for a second.

Does anyone have a clip or something that goes on a stick so it can hang off a table in a cafe etc, seen some online but they're a bit odd looking.
Mrs GMJ has these on her sticks...

Just check the diameter of the stick though Kev as she used to use the fold up ones which are quite thin. She now uses walking poles which give her better stability and keep her hips straight (she found using 1 walking stick twisted her slightly)

Thought of something which might help someone. If buying a mobility scooter from new there would, of course, be VAT to pay. Just, however, by declaring your condition the VAT can be zero rated. It is, apparently, left to the sales person to decide. Chris told her his condition, she wrote it in the relevant box, and the VAT was not included.

Chris is now the proud owner of a smaller scooter that comes apart to fit in the boot of the car. He has already worked out how to dismantle and re assemble it. I found him at the end of the drive this morning, when I returned from the dog walk, trying to bring a sack of bird seed back to the house. Looking forward to him finding some normality again.

I think as one dimension is only 15 inches ish it'll go in easily, not sure about the ergonomics of getting it in the van, we don't use the hab door except for loading and unloading at home so not going to be in the way, I think it will work okay, it looks sturdy enough, but need to go look at one as it's only about 4 miles away.

So is that 2 you now have Pat? Did you buy the 3 wheeled one as well?

Yes, Graham, although it has yet to be delivered. It will not, however, go in the car. There are thoughts of getting a van that it can be driven into using a ramp. Of course our minds immediately go to Chris doing the conversion which, of course, unless he improves, he cannot do. We are well known, in our village, for our tramps around all the footpaths together with the dog. It has been just me for quite a while. Chris is hoping to join me again on the three wheel scooter. He will also be able to go to the village shop or to the pub on it.

Probably too late now but does anyone know about grants for mobility aids?

It sounds as if you have some good idea/plans there Pat. I hope it works well for you both.

I've not gone a long way into it Pat, but around here, it seems wheelchairs get aid but not mobility scooters, might be different where you are.

As Kev alludes, I suspect it is done on a local authority by local authority basis. Also worth checking any charity websites that may deal with Chris' condition to see what they say.
