Hi there,
I am looking for a basic program for my laptop to keep a record of the balance on my accounts when I am away, I had one on my PC, but can't download it onto my laptop.

Can anyone suggest where I can download or purchase one? I only want something basic, not too complicated

Thanks in advance

Hi Cavaqueen

I use Moneydance on both laptop and mac. It works well for me and I transfer the backups from one machine to the other as necessary. Not sure of cost but I downloaded it and works on both PC & Mac.

Me too Money dance

http://moneydance.com/

Its $39.99 and you get at least three years free updates.

Whats wrong with a spreadsheet?

Derek
I've been using Quicken as a simple analysed cashbook for farm accounting since its DOS inception and currently use the Quicken 2000 version. Quicken is no longer sold or supported in the UK, and my version is incompatible with Vista so I'm stuck with Windows XP (no bad thing some might say)

Basically all I want to be able to do is produce transaction reports and quarterly VAT returns and do a regular bank reconciliation. I not interested in any form of double entry accounting, so no Sage for me please.

Has anyone used Money Dance in this way as a simple business accounting system? I'm concerned that one day my Quicken will become outdated and non-functional, and would like to know that there is a reliable and equally functional alternative.
I was going to say bank rec and reports ok but not vat report but I have just checked the help index and it looks possible probably best to download a trial version or email them.

I agree, I've been doing my own for many years and have found it much faster, simpler and producing more meaningfull results using Excel. The beauty of doing your own spreadsheets is that you can always make improvements.

Personally, I have gained a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction from learning how to build my own spreadsheets. but it's not eveyones idea of fun and many people would sooner buy a package off the shelf.
Google "free money manager programs"
You'll get 89,400,000 hits.

Might be something there !
Money Money Money

I was also using Quicken untill Vista, Now I'm using Microsoft Money.
This was bundled wit han old version of Microsoft Works i'ts no longer supported but hey it works fine for us

In some circles I am known for my spreadsheets that I have originated or developed both in Excel and Lotus (and even supercalc) for engineering and financial planning and budget control and have had great fun (?) making them BUT a data base is a better application to make an accounting package in.

So if you have a unique set of financial books or require a report that has never been done before then use Access or similar to develop them but otherwise there are plenty of reliable packages around. If you want a free one then check that someone is still maintaining it. I know someone who locked his small company into a free package only to find when Windows was upgraded the software would not work properly and his emails went unanswered. That may or may not matter to a private person still I'm glad I can still read my financial records that originally dwelt in a Psion NetBook.
Black and red book + pencil + calculator springs to mind, foolproof and reliable, cheap to run, little or no carbon footprint.

Quite agree but if it could only do Direct Debits Profit and Loss Investment management Bank reconciliation.

So how many columns do you want in your book I assume we are going to do double entry or at least running totals and then reconcile.

How did I know I could afford to take early retirement? I just asked the right questions of my finance package. How much going to work was costing me. How much I could reduce my spend. What my budgets were what would they could be.

(BTW I did a 'paper' Book keeping course in 2005, very time consuming but I passed an exam and am certificated to some fairly low order in the bookeeping fraternity :) )
Duh Joke Frank, I'm well aware of the complexities of modern accounting.

Kev.
I downloaded Moneydance and had a look and then unistalled it. It occurred to me I ought to check that the currency section does not update values from the internet but you have to enter in each time the relevant exchange rates.

If I am wrong then I will have another bash.

I was also concerned that the program may well be able to record your internet banking details in something and any hacker could simply download the known file and have everything he wants or indeed update sequences could well send your banking details back home where a little man is surrounded by billions of pounds of Moneydance customers. Are these irrrational thoughts. 8O
Once again, you have been a very helpful lot

Thank you

I also always used Quicken but haven't done so for a little while now. I really liked it because I used it's bigger brother Quick Books for many years at work.

I am disappointed to hear it wont work on Vista as I am getting a new PC soon and this really bugs me. My daughter tells me her camera wont work on Vista either and she now has to buy a new camera. All very frustrating and expensive.

I will have a look at Moneydance....but I'm still angry

BTW you could link up to your bank account on Quicken but I never did....like Pusser I am always a bit concerned about the extent things could go wrong if a hacker was clever enough to get into your precious accounts.
Of course you could always invest a small sum of GBP in a British product known as Money Manager by the software firm Moneysoft. The program is double entry but you do not have to understand this or be an accountant.

It was written by accountants and I used it when I was freelancing in the broadcast television industry and where the tax man kept his beady eye upon us! I now use it to maintain church accounts where turnover is in excess of £130K.

You can download a 30 trial from the website at www.moneysoft.co.uk

If you want an accounts package, one of our members is JQL, who markets "Visual Accounts" - >> LINK <<. £23.49 doesn't sound like a lot to pay to me :D

Gerald

P.S. Plus my commission, of course
