Have taken delivery of a Sprinter based 1996 Hymer S520 and it is now in the UK being readied for a MOT. Any tips on a source for an overlay to show MPH. Do not wish to change out the KPH speedo as MH will be exported to a country where KPH reading is required. Seems like the headlight dipping is an easy fix.

You don't need to be showing MPH for the MOT, it isn't part of the test.

No, but I understand it's now a requirement before an imported vehicle can be registered in the UK, nothing to do with MOT.

That's correct; a vehicle being imported is subject to an approval test, SVA/IVA, and that test requires MPH on the speedo, but it can't fail an MOT for not having it.

Ideally the overlay would just stick on the face of the speedometer and peel off when leaving the UK

Chap in germany that I bought it from said it only had one battery. Surely it is meant to have two. If so wher do we find the second one?

On the battery question, do you mean for the van or for the habitation?


The van battery is under the floor in the cab.


For a definitive answer on the habitation one, you'll need someone that owns or has owned the specific vehicle you have, however it will be either in a locker accessed from outside the vehicle, under one of the internal locker spaces, or perhaps if it has a double floor (unlikely for an early Sprinter based van), in a compartment in the floor space.

Thank you for your help. Managed to get a S520 manual in English in fact it covered all S class of that period. Happy to share if others need one. Now I know where the battery is I will check its condition. It came without a TVs so it looks like a adjustable monitor holder is the next thing to buy.

I just put in a tomtom in mph no one has ever looked, have had 8 mot's in UK
Tape for the lights
made sure that fog light complied with uk law ie if it has only 1 it will be on wrong side

Swap it over with reversing light

If think you will find that if the vehicle doesn't have left dipping headlights (as opposed to tape on right dippers) it will not pass the IVA (same as the speedo issue)

Without the SVA/IVA you won't be able to register it.
