Hello,
Just sold our T4, and taken on a 90's Fiat Ducato (CI Sirio). Previous history :- Reliant Robin with camping gear and dog, Escort van without dog,Beetle van with 1 then 2 children, the T4 with dog and no children.
Looking for a bit more comfort now we have lost the physical flexibility, and endurance of youth - at 71 and 65.
Delighted to discover that we can actually use the over-the-cab double bed ourselves (it isn't just stowage space that a couple of toddlers might be persuaded to see as "an adventure"). And trading the Porta-Potty for an onboard toilet! - well!- we did not need persuading.
There are, of course, many things that need a bit of sprucing up, some proper repairs and possibly some replacements/upgrades in the offing. But my first major problem is that I have no user instructions for any of the gear, and some of the labelling on controls is in Italian. So I will be posting requests for information on any of the items I don't manage to find online. I am reluctant to go with a suck-it-and-see approach to the operation of the gas heater/water boiler, or to risk finding out that there is no domestic battery charging arrangement on a return visit here, say :-

I think it will be best to post appeals for information item by item (some may have to be just a photograph with a "What is this?" heading) unless anyone reading this happens to have a copy of the entire, original Owners Manual, in English would be great, that they would be prepared to scan for me (though I'm pretty sure that a fair bit of what I have here is not as originally fitted).
One final query - I suppose I can call myself a motorhomer now that we have that much-prized, plumbed-in Thetford ? We have only lately come to appreciate that many folk are fierce guardians of the distinction between MH's and the somewhat despised "Camper-Vanners" (and vice versa) . And I see that there is a further category of "Motorcaravan". Do I need to gen-up on these distinctions in order not to be black-balled for giving offence by self-identifying with a "Culture" I am not entitled to or welcome in?

Welcome Mike. We are all campers as far as I am concerned even in a Reliant Robin with a mattress in it! :D

Dont know the van you have but I have a 1996 vintage Kontiki which I have had for 14 years. Some of the stuff might be similar. Not much to these old vans really thats complex. Most stuff on mine you can fix with rubber tape and self tappers. In fact I think thats what Swift made it out of. :D

Welcome Mike. We've been motorhoming for many years and are just as happy with people calling it a camper van or a motorhome. I've yet to meet anyone who despised any of those terms. Though when people have asked what the difference is between a motorhome and a camper van I have seen the fixed toilet cited along, I think, with the shower.

Hi Mike and welcome!

Ask away, it's how we all learned.

It might be helpful when you DO ask a question if you have a reasonably descriptive title to the thread and add a couple of photos of the problem.

Good luck with figuring it all out and I hope we can help. (Love the photo!)

Thank you all for the welcomes. I will certainly follow your advice, Jean.
I should perhaps have added that we are in Orkney, about 4 miles from the harbour that the ferry to Gills Bay (on the north coast of Scotland) works from. Is there a place where this sort of thing is made available to members seeking local information - a member profile or what-have-you ? Or do folk just post an open enquiry?

If you tap the avatar in my post you can see I'm in Belfast. On yours there's no location info. But I don't k ow how to get it there! Maybe someone else can help. (I use only my phone for access so maybe it's obvious on the full site.)

Hi Mike and welcome

Where we live in west Wales the word 'motorhome' doesn't seem to exist as ours is always called "the camper" by the locals :)

We've got used to it...

"The Camper" is better than those ignoramus's who refer to our motorhomes as "That Caravan thing".
