Why do they need to advertise anyway? most of us have no allegiance to any particular supplier of fuel.

I suppose the cost of advertising will be set against what tax they do actually pay, they obviously can afford to so why not.

The stock market is also to blame, these companies have shareholders to keep happy or they sell and the companies value drops.
