Hi
We have just brought a Motorhome and we are very excited to use it! I have suggested to my wife on a number of times that we should go wild camping but she always says it is unsafe and won't go! Or it is against the law here in England is this true?

York

Hi

If I was looking for a free park in York, I would use the big Tesco on Tadcaster Road. It is also the park and ride location with buses into the city centre.

For members of the C&CC there is a 5 van site at York Cricket and Rugby Club, Clifton Park, York. It is a gentle stroll or bike ride to York centre via the river side path and you can use the facilities iof the club house when it is open. Yorkshire Region of the C&CC hold a holiday rally there for about 6 weeks over July and August and if you do not need EHU it is very good at £7 per night.

As far as I remember the P & R has a height barrier, & the Tesco probably a time limit. The P & R's finish quite early in the evening, though York has a good bus service in from the extremities otherwise.

There's a Caravan Club CL in Heslington Lane - Bleak House Farm - no EHU, on the edge of the built-up area, low fees, almost wild-camping!

We stayed at Bleak house farm CL a couple of weeks ago. It's just the job for getting into York, there's a bus stop right at the end of the lane which is a couple of minutes walk from the camping field. :D

York has a good motorhome friendly P&R system. A19 road McArthur Glenn Designer outlet is accessible from the South, just drive in and find a sensible parking place. Rawcliffe Bar P&R on the A19 North side is even better. Drive up to the barrier and the attendant will open it for you, but no overnight parking.
There are several certificated sites around York, some on or near bus routes.
I am going to York again in a couple of weeks and have booked a CL from the C&CC Big book, ref York 105 185 which is in Earswick on the Strensall bus route.
Loveley city, but don't take a MH in unless you are a masochist, or going to Rowntree Park CC site; but if you are then follow the instructions closely. Nice site, but a bit pricey in summer and a swine to book any time of the year!

It's not against the law in general but will be against by-laws in certain locations such as car parks, but this will be signposted "No Overnight camping" or some such.

As for the wisdom of wild camping.....well, that's personal choice.
