I think this is probably the place to ask as you´re the ones that use tools the most.
?
I think I´ve had a good idea🤔.

This metal filing cabinet has a lot of tools in I want to keep, but not in it´s present place, I want to move it into the shed where in winter it gets a bit chilly, but never found anything damp.
I have had an idea, what if I line the draws with polystyrene to keep them a bit warmer is that a good or bad idea or not?

Despite what has been stated, WD-40 (Water Dispersement) is excellent for spraying on tools to prevent rusting. The added advantage being that is easier to remove than an oil based product.

Jan the best preserving tools are a large thick copper saucepan and big wooden spoon my old mum used to say😉 oops I'll get my coat.

Jan

Do you remember that an 'oily rag' like 'grease monkey' is/was used as a description of a mechanical worker who got their fingers dirty doing messy jobs?

Ooh ah, all these suggestions are making my head spin. Maybe I should leave the cabinet in the house, it´s so ugly though.
I´ve been in the shed making a space for it and the things I am re-discovering that I just need to get rid of so that someone can make good use of them.
A tent we bought at a loo tent years ago, big enough to get 2 bikes in as well as a portable.-loo.
A pair of Milenco ramps, very heavy, they were used to lift the Motorhome to get underneath for whatever. They were hiding behind a wooden board.
I have a huge pile of stuff that just has to go to someone, not gather dust and cobwebs in my shed.

My idea is.
First I am going to have a false ceiling and dividing wall + toilet area built
Here is my plan, a real professional. drawing😁 nothing written on it, but the room at the back a bedroom, then a shower/basin/toilet. the rest as an extension to my utility room. It´s a shame to leave it as one huge room 10 meters X 5 meters not unless I open it as a party room to rent, or a pub with bring your own drinks.

Those are sold as levelling ramps for heavy vans Jan and worth money. I had to buy a pair for our vany (6 tonne) after a pair of the yellow Fiamia ones were totally distroyed the first time I drove on to them. Try ebay "collect".

Soon got rid of those 2 things, the tent goes to the grandchildren of Marko and Inis when they come to visit, which is quite often in the summer, Marko will have the levelling ramps for when he needs to work under their cars. I´m always happy when I can give them something for times Marko does things for me and never accepts cash.

Don`t moan at me.
In the night I changed my mind about moving the cabinet to the shed, after I had made space in there for it. Instead it can be moved this end and I cover it with throw over or do something to disguise it Then on the odd occasion when I need something it will be close at hand still and the way Ím used to having things. I have learnt something about tool preservation So it wasn`t a waste of time. Thank you for your help chaps, it helps me a lot to discuss things with you all.

The chap who is going to do the false ceiling and partitions was here with Mario (my construction manager for the job :D) Turns out my furniture planning is a bit previous because everything will have to be taken out before he starts the job, there`s quite a bit of preparation, removing a lot of 3 phase points for a start and the ceiling fluorescent lights, covering the central heating pipes, the water meters and outside taps that can be turned off independently from the inside. Mario is going to ask my neighbour across the road who is a retired plumber about doing the shower etc. so that will be bit of a saving. I`ll stop thinking about shifting stuff about now I know what’s what.
a tad expensive for just spraying on tools ..

my dad used to dip his tools in a basin of old engine sump oil ..

remember the days when we did our own oil changes..
I still do oil changes on all 4 of my vehicles. But using old sump oil is just so dirty. Especially from diesel's.
