Why am earth would anyone want to drive through London? Even the outer areas.
I used to work in London and the pollution was terrible. The inner city bit is a lot better but further out it's still bad.
Park and ride.

My wifes two sisters live in New Malden well within the LEZ. We are just wondering if she can drive our 20 year old French registered Golf to go see them?

Our French car is registered with them and is foc, when I get a new Blue Permit later this year if I pay £10 I will be exempt from congestion charge in Central London for the life of the Blue Permit.

Yes, they do chase you back to France, or they pass the details to a commercial company in France/Germany etc., who do the chasing for the TFL and their exorbitant fee. There was a report a while ago of one hapless French driver who ended up with a bill for nigh on 2k€ after not realising he should have paid for the Thames crossing, he went off on a longish trip, claims he was not at home so did not receive bill from company which doubled virtually every week.

He refused to pay, action was taken in French Court which was thrown out on some technicality but if he tries to get back into the U.K. he will be arrested and the vehicle impounded allegedly. Time to change vehicle and name methinks….

Thanks Dave. Personally I would be happy never to go near London again but as my wife tries to visit both her sisters twice a year it could get complicated.

We haven't been for a number of years now so we fancied visiting for a few days. We'd like to see the Cutty Sark as it was closed for refurb when we last went.

My first career took me dangerously close to London when I moved and was based in Basingstoke. The next move would have been up to the smoke. As such I jumped at the chance to work in the Toon. We lived up on Northumberland with a view over fields to the sea. Lovely.

I thought the Dartford Crossing charges are a civil charge so I cannot understand where the process of arrest and confiscation could arise. As you say 'allegedly'

Good old Citizen Khan !!

There was a consultation and about 80% were against it, but of course that didnt influence Ghengis in the slightest, Why do people vote for him? Or Nicoliar Sturgeon for that matter?

Cite one of Ms. Sturgeon's lies please Andy. I find her an admirable politician and was unaware that she suffered from that defect.

Interesting debate between the London major and Martin Lewis.
Lewis agreed clean air was an important aim but the timing with the cost of living so high would be tough.
And of course it is but as was pointed out there hasn't been a good time since 2017.
And how many people dying is an acceptable amount while it's delayed?
Who wants to pull that number out of the air?
It's around 4000 people a year dying in London related to air pollution.
So if we delay 3 years is 12000 dead worth it?

The Mayor was not able or willing to say how many of the 4000 a year are in the original or proposed extended zones.
The Mayor could not say how many of the 4000 a year dying now would be not die in the years following the expansion of the zone.

I wonder if those who called for the establishment of the London Mayor and voted in Greater London devolution referendum in 1998 knew what was coming. Perhaps like Brexit it seemed a good idea at the time. One thing for sure is that once established it will continue to evolve. Now it is proposed that pre euro6 vehicles will be effected. When they have been scrapped than you can bet euro6 will be subject to the charge and only electric vehicle exempt. When all diesel and petrol vehicles have been eliminated they will move on to electric vehicles. The set up costs for the scheme and annual running costs will ensure that money must continue to roll in.

Yes I guess it's hard to know the actual figures. So it could just be a few hundred lives lost if the pollution is allowed to continue.
A few hundred is ok isn't it?
Curious to know how many lives are expendable to justify not acting to reduce the pollution?

I wouldn't be so sceptical about this and other schemes, if I could see the revenue generated used to enable those least able to, to be able to afford a shiny new vehicle that meets the latest target figure. Until that time, please excuse me if I consider the low emissions zones to be a combination of just that, a revenue stream and, just possibly, social exclusion.
