Tried Saga for MH Insurance this year - Brilliant quote!

Hi all,

Like us all, I started the usual, annual, round of web site request/ telephone calls to get Insurance quotes a couple of weeks back. Tried numerous of the recommendations from this site too... (thanks!)

Now a member of the "Saga-set" 8O but the Saga web site didn't appear competitive a month or so ago, but when another "junk mail" letter arrived from them I thought I'd phone.

I don't think I've ever been offered so many discount options!

- 10% introductory discount
- A new customer £15 discount
- Suggested it may be cheaper to put the wife down as named driver ...but she'll never drive it as it's bigger than her Corsa  .. doesn't matter though...all discounts welcome thank you!
- Another £20 off. if I have a no obligation Car insurance quote too
- (and £20 off THAT Car Insurance quote, coz I'm having a MH quote too!)
- Protected No Claims
- Legal cover (optional)
- Full UK & Euro 365 day breakdown cover (7m van covered ok) £87

OK ... I haven't got the £30 - £50K MH often referred to on MHF  but all the above cover on a £20K (and brilliant with it :D ) 6 berth Swift for £185 annual premium!!!

All other quotes £100-200 more .... no brainer. Saga's Car Insurance quote was good too!!

Obviously these first year/ new customer discounts mean that next year Saga not be as competitive but Saga got my cash this year.

Worth a phone call if you are in the market soon? If you get Shiraz (the chap that did all my quote options at Saga ... not the wine!) he's a star.

Good bargain hunting

We have been with Saga for about 7 years and very happy with the Motorhome insurance.
However my wife is insured with Churchill and I tried Saga for a quote and they were about 10% more expensive.
When my car came for renewal a week ago Churchill were also 10% cheaper so I insured my car with them and I renewed our Hymer with Saga. I did not loose the discount for a second vehicle.
Next year I may have to return to Saga to get the second vehicle discount
I got a quote from Saga a few years ago but it was very expensive so did not take it up and ever since have had a lot of letters asking to let them give me another quote. One such letter arrived recently as it is renewal time so I decided to see if they were any better than the renewal from my current insurer.
None of the details I gave them for my last quote has changed so I did not expect any problems and I was shocked when they refused to quote me this time beacuse my van is parked on the road outside my house ..... and I bet I will still get flyers asking me to call for a quote :x :x :
saga is briliant until you want to add someone onto policy under 50 then its no go
This year changed to put 26 y.old son in law on .. Hope he doesn`t like driving it..

John...we've been with Saga ever since we've been eligible and are very happy with them.

It is worth checking with them that, in the event of you being unable to drive when you're out in your van, would they expect your wife, as named driver, to get it home ? If you broke your leg and there was no other named driver then the insurance company would have to send someone to drive your van back home. If there is another driver insured then will she be expected to drive it ?

Just a thought...

I was thinking the same. My wife can drive, but no way would she drive the motorhome, so she is not on the policy for this very reason
I gave Saga the opportunity to insure my 807 Peugeot this year. Fine until said I wanted 'any driver over 25' then the premium went up to £700+ (and others I found).

Consequently I have stayed with my original broker who found me fully comp insurance, protected bonus, legal cover and any driver over 25 for £355.

When asking Saga for insurance for my RV I was told emphatically "we don't do Americans" so have stayed with Safeguard!
saga

we were with Saga last year and changed our m/h. They added the new one which brought the premium up to about £450. The excess was £600. This year they wanted £525. Phoned Caravan Guard for same cover with less excess (£200) cost £375! Thanks MHF apparently they give discounts if you have a reversing camera and we also have a Tracker.
I have been with Saga for several years now and have been pleased with their prices.

This week end I renewed the policy on our 2004 Autotrail Tracker EKS - last year I paid £250, the renewal price was £190! - that's a tank of fuel that I have saved!

Thanks for all replies folks.

Grizzly & St Aubyns .... good point about querying is wife EXPECTED to drive MH if I break my leg. She probably wouldn't want to. However, I did note somewhere in the Condidtions there's reference that, in an emergency, others can drive the motorhome home.

When the full Saga pack comes through I'll read the small print! 8O

DaveP ... I didn't ask about an under 50 on the MH but I CAN add my 23 y.old student son on at any time on the separate Car Insurance for a £10 Admin Fee, and of course the additional premium. The increase compared favourably with (current) More Than policy too.

Stuart ... yes, sounds like you've encountered Saga's competitive quoting this year. Hope your £190 includes Euro Breakdown cover too?

cheers all

grout20 (John) - as we do not leave the UK (as there is so much the we have still not discivered here!) we do not need Euro Breakdown!

SAGA INS

Hi Everyone, I have just signed up as I am considering buying my first Motor Home and this site looks to have all the answers. I will need lots of advice but untill I make my list out I just thought I would mention that when I asked SAGA for a quote, couldn't do it on line as I haven't the reg number, because it is my first motor home I get no NO CLAIMS discount so for an old motor home worth £1,500 the quote was £310.96.
I will be along shortly with all my other questions. BYE
Hi WATTON, and welcome to MHF

I used Alan Blunden Insurance for my first MH quote 3 years ago and I'm pretty sure they mirrored my (car) No Claims Bonus at the time.

I'm sure some others will too if you phone around.

(Sorry, haven't got Blunden phone number on me, but just google 'em)

Good luck!

MH Insurance

When we got our 1st MH quote from SAGA, they mirrored our car NCB. This might have been because we also had our car insurance with them.

Young driver insurance

Hi, new member here. We got a very competitive quotation from Saga with me as the only named driver (over 50), but allowing 'add-on' drivers at £10.50 per week, over 21 years old with a licence for more than a year. The first time we tried to add-on they refused as our son-in-law is only 24, despite having a full clean licence for nearly 6 years! We are now trying to find an alternative company who can match Saga's quote (£116) and allow us to add our son in law so they may borrow the van for the odd week or two. Can anyone suggest where to look? Safeguard have quoted me £297.67 and Co-op £238.51.
My insurance is due 1st July and my Comfort renewal is £335 (last year it was £320)

I have a quote from Safeguard of £385 who did not ask if I had modified the engine - I have, its been chipped - and when I told them , they were not interested.

I rang Saga, asked for, and went through the process of a quote and hit what seems like a snag when I mentioned the fact that its been chipped.

To keep it short I was asked a fair few questions, put on hold for a short while, and they will ring me back in a couple of days with a price.

so its wait and see with the saga quote, but I'm fairly sure I will be staying with Comfort.

I will let you know :?

Motorhome Insurance

Hi all,

Received my renewal notice from Safeguard and the standard wording "your current policy with Allianz appears to meet your needs" and a price of £346.

From past experience, the sentence used above usually means they haven't bothered to update or requote and as long as the price is within a few quid of last year, the majority will just pay up.

Having had uncompetetive quotes in the past but based on recent people's experience, thought I'd give Saga a shout.

Basic price was £164 but talk of insuring my other vehicle gave me a £40 discount along with other £30 intro discounts and upgrading personal accident and legal protection took it to £144. Added in £87 for Assistance Plus breakdown cover which includes European cover took it to a total of £231. A saving of £115.

Cheers,
Alan

Just had my Saga quote - £397 so I will be staying with Comfort at £335 once more :D
insurance

Just done the rounds (again!) Safeguard £390(renewal, been with them a number of years), Club £426, Comfort £318 + breakdown, Caravan Guard £285, Saga who I only tried after reading your comments, £275! includes full breakdown (no euro), legal and personal accident and I although I put the co-pilot on she has never driven it. I like the facility of in the event of neither of us being able to drive through illness etc. they cover any qualified driver to drive the M/H. So thats it then, Saga it is. None of us will know how good any of them are until.......................................
(don't say it!)
