un booked dover ferries

The short answer is yes.
Whether you will pay anything other than the standard undiscounted fare is debatable.
I have to ask why you would want to do this.
Is it because you are not sure exactly when you might arrive at Dover having travelled across the Irish Sea and then across England?
You could book a ferry and then just turn up late or early as long as it is the same tariff sailing.
We had a problem on one occasion and couldn't get away from home on the correct day. We just turned up exactly 24 hours late, explained we'd had a last minute hitch and they put us on the next ferry.
What they don't accept is if you turn up for a premium rate ferry having booked a cheap/off-peak. They think you are trying it on (which many do) and make you pay the extra to go.

Agree with Gillian.I chop and change all the time with P&O and as long as i am within the same tariff band and approach them politely there never has been a problem.
I did try it on going out this Spring and arrived early...Yes i could go earlier £90.00 extra or wait half an hour for my booking.
Out of July/August peak there is still a lot of empty deck on the short sea crossings.
So did we go or did we wait?

We've often been sent on an earlier boat when we arrive to book in.
We've often thought that if they have the space and send us early they are creating a space on the next ferry which they can sell to anyone just turning up.
Similarly from Calais.
We arrived at the port 2 days early when we came back from France on 3rd May but they put us on. Again we turned up for the same time ferry although the wrong day.

Hi Aido,
When you arive in Dover, go to Dover Eurochange, on left before you get to docks. You will see a hotel with a shelter thing at front and a road you can park on if a space is available. To left of Hotel is Dover Eurochange. They offer discount crossings and I have always had fares cheaper than any in advance. Only time you will have a small delay is if the Chunnel is closed for some reason and ferries are busy.
Another option is around the corner there is an Internet Cafe and you can also go online there and book ferries with numerous companies or direct with ferry operator and very much cheaper that going to ticket office for same day travelling.

I see that they are open 08.00 to 18.00
What a pity they aren't open an hour or two later.
We could have gone to our overnight spot on the Marine Parade opposite and walked over and booked for next morning.
Still well worth knowing.

Hi autostratus, Gillian, Aido, et all
If like me you do not know when you are returning you can book an open return or as I do phone from Calais and book using credit card, and go to check in kiosks armed with Booking reference.
Also they have a good exchange rate for changing cash - much better than the bank the last time I was there.
