Unlocked Dongle: Idiots Guide

This applies to Huawei dongles only, I have not tried with dongles from other manufacturers. This is what worked for me and I hope it will be of assistance to others.

Firstly you can unlock your dongle at DCunlocker or post it to The Funfone Shop near Sheffield, both can be found on the net. This thread describes a free resource which can unlock dongles. I have not used it but you might like to try it. http://www.motorhomefacts.com/ftopic-66876-days0-orderasc-0.html

In order to use an unlocked dongle with various data cards you MUST use unbranded software, so forget about the software provided by Vodafone, three etc., use Mobile Partner, it is generic software for Huawei dongles and is easy to use. Mobile Partner can be downloaded here http://www.dc-unlocker.com/downloads/get/VFgle87 or here http://gadgetpure.info/download-mobile-partner-huawei-connection-app/download.html These links seem a bit unreliable, you can find Mobile Partner on the dc-unlocker.com web site under downloads and get it direct from there, it may also be obtainable from the Huawei web site. Download it and have it ready for use.

All through this process you must ignore the proprietary software in your dongle, it loads it's self but just ignore it, do not use it, it will not work with other networks. Use Mobile Partner instead.

When your dongle is unlocked (and updated if necessary), open mobile partner and create a new connection, instructions below. To create a new connection you will need the APN settings for the data card you are going to use, again obtainable on the net or from the list below. APN is access point name, a general term for the settings required to establish a connection. In my case I wanted to connect to 3, I looked up my settings which where

Access Point or apn: three.co.uk
Username: guest
Password: guest

Enter this information in the appropriate boxes in Mobile Partner by clicking on Tools, then Options, then Profile Management. Having entered the APN information tick the box to select the Static option and click the button on the right to set that new connection as your default connection. The three items above were enough for me to create my new connection although providers other than 3 may require more settings, again all should be on the net.

If the above did not work for you there may be some issues between your computer operating system and your dongle. My primary dongle is an Huawei E220 which is quite old and as standard will not work with vista. Data Card Updates (Dongle updates) and manuals can be downloaded from DCunlocker and maybe from Huawei. I had to update mine, it is a simple process although it takes some time. Updating MUST be done with the SIM CARD REMOVED FROM YOUR DONGLE. I suggest you also download the updater manual and refer to it as you go along. Here is a Huawei site where you can download generic software suitable to your computers operating system (eg. vista, mac, xp etc.) mainly for their older dongles, http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/doc/list.do?type=-1&id=66

I have noticed that on other threads people are looking for drivers or software for the cards they wish to use in their unlocked dongles. For example someone wishing to use an unlocked dongle on the Vodafone Spain network was looking for Vodafone.es drivers or software. Do not do this, just use Mobile Partner and manually enter the APN settings for each network you want to use. Once have done that you just change your default connection as you change from sim to sim or move from country to country.

I hope this will be helpful and I will try to answer any questions.

If you find that any of these links do not work you will be able to find all you need by doing a Google search. Regards, Alan.

APN Settings

You will need to enter the appropriate "APN" settings in Mobile Partner to enable you to use any new data sim and connect to the network belonging to that provider.

The settings can be obtained from your desired network provider although most shop staff will not have clue what you are talking about. Below are a few settings to give you a head start, if they do not work check with your provider as these may be out of date. APN settings can be found on the net.

You enter these settings into Mobile Partner as described above. These may change from time to time so if you are having difficulty check the net to ensure you are using current APN settings.

To stop the Vodaphone stuff autorunning, you should be able to see the dongle as another disk drive (double-leftclick on My Computer, it should be listed). Open that drive to view contents in Explorer, and Rightclick on the file named Autorun.exe..then choose Rename and change it to Autobak.bak or anything else. This should stop it trying to install every time.

Rocles, Did what you suggested. There are two directories in there both with a vodafone logo, one called Helper and the other called Setup. I am afraid clicking various ways and looking at all the options did not help, I could not open them. The only option I could get was to run the programmes. Tried copying the directories to another drive and then deleting them from the dongle but was not allowed to delete. When I try a message says 'cannot reset read only mode'.

Although I can live with just stopping it when it tries to run it would be nice to prevent that happening. Any further suggestions welcome. Regards Alan.

Alan, I had the autoplay problem, but I prevented it by turning off autoplay for that drive letter using Tweakui for Windows XP (available as part of the Powertweaks download, I seem to remember). Not sure if there is a version for Vista - maybe not, but I imagine there are other ways of disabling autoplay for a specific drive.

Dongle

Hi

Just to be clear on this, as I am not the most I T aware...

My dongle is an Italian one - manufactured by Huawei and operated originally with the WIND network. This has been unlocked. I know this as I can send text messages using the dongle - and this can be done with T Mobile or THREE sim cards in situ.

When I connect the WIND branded dongle, the "original" WIND start up screen appears. Is this the bit I need to disable? If so, when I double left click my computer, this does not appear!!!!

Yikes

thank you Mel

Yes, you can use it if France although data there is more expensive than in the UK.

If you look on this forum you will find a recent discussion about Mobicarte France. That seems to be the best deal and as far as i remember you are best to buy the card before you go, Alan.

Here is the link. http://www.motorhomefacts.com/ftopict-60151-.html

Mel, sorry I do not understand the question. But, the dongle plugs into a usb port on your computer (lap top or otherwise) and can be used to connect to the internet. If you want to use you dongle to connect through various service providers (possibly in various countries) then your dongle (usb modem) must be unlocked and you must use software which is not ´locked´ to one service provider, Mobile Partner. Does that help, Alan.

Hi all,

Before being aware of this thread, I unlocked my 3 Dongle for £9.99 using this Ebay Trader. It came with the Mobile Partner already on it.
I sent the dongle by first class recorded delivery on the Monday, and I received it back via the same, on the Wednesday. Excellent service.

He also supplies those o2 iPhone sim cards at http://dongle-unlock.webs.com/ if you don't want to go through ebay.

Cheers,

Jock.

Hi All,

I have just sorted this problem out for myself on another forum. I am unable to post a link so I will copy and paste. (A lot will know the forum anyway)

I unlocked it using dc-unlocker and downloaded Mobile partner. Note the different settings for Apn as they are different than the ones said earlier.

Yipee,

I have got it working at last.

That is my 3 dongle with o2 sim free internet.

The settings for apn I came accross by dogged persistence

I downloaded Mobile Partner from dc-unlocker

Dc-unlocker | downloads - ZTE, Sonyericsson , Sierra, Option, Novatel, Maxon, Huawei

or

Dc-unlocker | downloads - ZTE, Sonyericsson , Sierra, Option, Novatel, Maxon, Huawei

It is in "Not customised managers"

unzip and then do this

Tool/options/profilemanagement/new

Profile = o2

Apn = Dynamic (so it is blank)

user = web

pass = web

Well that is how i got it to work, says 53.6 kbps

Now need to test it a bit more, Oh, and see if I can still get it to work with 3 sim

Help needed

Can anyone tell me how to disable autostart on the dongle?

I have tried

Moving

Re-naming

Change from read only

Ideas please!

Thanks for the help as it made me more determined, just took a long time.

Steve

On your computer you can choose which programmes automatically start at boot, covered on page 1 in the original post, or you can just ignore it trying to run (it cannot run unless you allow it to) and use Mobile Partner instead, Alan.

Well here is one idiot that the guide does not work for. I have down loaded the unlocker It can not find the data dongle, downloaded the mobile connect and that has disappeared somewhere in to the computer never to be found.
Think I will stick to knitting narr could not do that either.

Inkey, I am quite happy to help, pm me if you want help and we can do it by email if you like.

First you will need to unlock your dongle, then search for Mobile Partner as you will need it, or down load it again and note where it is being saved, Alan.

brimo, try ebay for an unlocked one, or contact The Fun Fone Shop (Google it). If you buy one in a shop look for one made by Huawei as they tend to be easily unlocked, check the model, before buying, against those which can be unlocked on the DCunlocker site or with Fun Fone Shop, it takes a while for unlocking to be available for very new models.

You could buy a UK pay as you go one, Vodafone recently had one at a fair price including a UK sim card and some data to get you started (around 50 pounds I think), so an unlocked dongle is worth around 50 to 60 pounds max.

Some got them for just a few pounds from 3 I think, those can be unlocked. I have unlocked using DCunlocker but there is a link on the first post to a site where others say you can unlock for free, Alan.
