Urgent advice please - Insurance

I need some urgent advice please folks.

My insurance renewal arrived from Frank Pickles and all appeared fine. £180 for the year and I pay a further £50 to Britannia for breakdown.

Was about to renew today and a friend suggested I check the windscreen cover, so I did. The limit is £500! My 1992 Hymer A class, im guessing, would be an awful lot more than that for a new screen, am I right in thinking that?

Do people just run the risk of self insuring over £500 for windscreen or would people recommend alternative insurers if the cost of replacement is much much higher?

Any help appreciated, I need to sort for tomorrow.

Thank you.

Edit: Quick update. Hambilton engineering stock windscreens for supply only at £520 plus VAT. What would it cost to get one fitted as this option combined may not be much more than my cover limit? Unless if course it lets go in Cornwall or France which is another matter!

It may be a risk worth taking? Get a quote from one of the windscreen companies for the Hymer, see whether it's worth it when comparing prices. We have C&CC's cover for our Pilote A class - unlimited for the windscreen - and it has a £50 excess with an approved repairer, or £100 if unapproved.
Windscreen for my Hymer E-510 would have been £3000 to replace - my insurance covered it & I only had to pay the 'excess' of £60 . . get insurance with FULL windscreen cover is my advice !
Your 'van is pretty much the same as ours with a different layout. It certainly has the same windscreen. Caravanwise gave me an online quote in December which I could not believe but it was confirmed when I phoned them. It includes full windscreen cover and they don't ask for your inside leg measurement. There's an excess of £75.00 but unlimited claim amount for windscreens. see http://www.caravanwise.co.uk/motor-quote/Resources/CaravanwiseMotor.pdf

I'm far from retired and park the 'van behind my house and my quote was well under what you have been quoted. Give them a call.
Hymer Windscreen cover

Don't even think about going without less than unlimited. Our 640 windscreen had to be refitted 4 times by Autoglass and still leaked - the screen was priced at £1205 from Hymer UK!!

Eventually Hambiltons fitted it properly, after it had been in & out like a fiddler's elbow in the Autoglass workshops. £500 simply wouldn't have got near the problem.
I'd back up Smick on this one. Fitting a huge and odd shaped windscreen into a non-metallic shell such as a motorhome must need specialist knowledge outside of that given to a run of the mill automotive screen fitter. No disrespect to those who work doing screenfitting but this isn't a Renault Megane! Also, the modern windscreen employs a much different fitting approach to (especially older) A-class mtorhomes which look much more like the old style rubber seal approach. Just had a look at ours and it has more in common with my first car, a Mk2 Escort than with my 2006 Zafira.

I wouldn't use these franchise type glass people anyway - never had a window fitted satisfactorily by them yet - leaks, scratched paint, wrong glass.

It'd be a factory jobbie for me and hang the expense!

Therefore, full glass cover with no limit is essential.

Ps mines going into hambiltons (not a franchise type!) to get some cabinetwork done. Impressed with their attitude so far, very helpful. It's the way 'customer service' used to be!

I adre say if you called frank, and asked to upgrade the windscreen cover, it would be no problem! You will find the £500 is a general policy that covers 95% of motorhomes (ie C-Class) Give them a call first and see what they can do - failing that look at getting seperate windscreen cover if need be!
