I have been looking to replace my VW base van with another make but have decided to keep to VW as i do not have to shout to make the navigator hear me a noisy engine is more tiring on a long drive, i tried the ford 2.5 TD but boy what a racket, i was put off getting a fiat base due to bad gear boxes, badly fitted front doors service problems etc. i was adivsed to go for the peugot HDI engine any one got any comments.

we changed to vw about 2 years ago to get something that we actually wanted to drive.
previously had fiat 1.9td it was great for what is was designed to do, reliable, great for climbing thro into the back, pain on long journeys / anything more than mid 50s. and fiat garages have nil idea on customer service.
test drove new pug engine, seemed ok, but not as driver friendly as vw!
have heard complaints from someone with merc [not a camp/mh conversion] but not specific - just a whinge! :?
good hunting

Hello

We have not been pleased with Peugeot Boxer servicing ( havent been able to find a garage we would be willing to reccomend) and long wait for availability of spare parts. This may be due to incompetance of staff not ordering goods immedistely but waiting till it was worth while.

Our previous mh which we had for two and a half years was on a Fiat 2.8iDti We covered about 20,000 in it.
Our current mh which we've had for 15 months is on a Peugeot 2.8HDi and has covered about 9,000 miles.
I do the driving and to be honest I can't tell any real difference.

I suspect that wanting a VW or a Mercedes base vehicle may have put our current vehicle out of our price range although to be fair the engine type was never a consideration. It was the habitation layout etc which sold it to us first, other factors were then considered.

Hi Motorhomer and welcome. That's real anonymity you've got there with you name.

Servicing
Having had problems with our Fiat we set out to find someone to service our new Peugeot almost as soon as we got it.
We live in Loughborough so as well as locally we tried Leicester, Derby and Nottingham for a mh 3,500kgs, 3m high and 7,25m long. We couldn't find anyone and the nearest we got was 'bring it in and we'll see'.
In the end I rang Peugeot direct and complained about the lack of sensible information pertaining to motorhomes in their manuals.

They gave me the name of Bristol in Banbury as a dealer who did service vehicles of our type.
When it came time we booked in for 9am and it was ready as they promised before lunch. It was the 1st service and there was no charge but neither did they charge for any consumables, oil etc.
In addition to the service we asked them to refix some of the bits removed and replaced during a visit to a dealer in France after a major breakdown. They tidied this up and again no charge.
That was our first and only visit but we will certainly go there again notwithstanding the distance from home.

The garage is on a main road and easy to find and Banbury town centre is within easy walking distance. If you don't want that then there is a big Tesco? for a browse and a coffee about 400 yards away.

Our 1.9tdi diesel T4 has over 100k on the clock with no smoke at all and very quiet, its still a van but drives effortlessly. The doors clunk solidly and only minor rust here and there with no rattles. I have only two experiences of Danes of Wrexham, the local VW dealer, both for small trim bits, very efficient and reasonable. (Oooops that reminds me I need to pick up that handbrake gatter!!) 8O

All in all - no complaints up to now.
