Warning:Boot Devices have changed

2102 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  lgbzone
Whenever my computer reboots it always hangs at the bios page with the "warning, boot devices have changed, press F1 to continue or change bios settings"

The bios bit tells me to press a key, can't remember which it is

However, the boot sequence has not changed but consequently when updates are downloaded in the night, it always stops at this page.

Its not a major problem, and I can live with it, but I would like to fix it.

Any ideas?

I think you have to hit DEL, accept changes save and exit, but wait for confirmation from someone else before doing it.

Hi, it might be that the small battery on the motherboard is shot. This keeps the BIOS settings. Do you notice that the date has been lost or reset to 2000 or sometime in the past? You may need to replace this small circular battery. This sometimes happens when the battery looses power and the machine is turned off.

Hi Keith

the Bios time is OK, so the battery must be OK

Hi, My suggestion won't cause any harm, it's what you do when you put new gear in, if you haven't done that then it could be it's just forgotten what HDD is has in kit, not an uncommon problem, it might be F2 it's asking you to hit, just look next time you boot up.

What is the boot preferences set to in BIOS. Should be Hard drive first then CD. You can have it the other way and BIOS will/should ask if you want to boot off cd before continuing from HD.

Check you havn't got Floppy as a boot with no floppy in the system you will get problems.

Kevs suggestion is pretty much on the mark.
it keeps asking you because it hasn't been accepted, go into the bios, check the boot settings, adjust if prefered and then exit saving the changes. if it continues to ask after that it could be the cmos battery, it's a cr2032, but usually when the battery has gone you get a checksum error which you are not getting. there is no right or wrong way to setup the boot order, it's down to preference and usage, the floppy can be selected as the computer will just ignore it and move to the next item if there is not a floppy in the drive, or the floppy doesn't have a valid boot sector.
