Hi Loury777

My experience is that the commercial Hot spots are easily accessed from the car park of participating properties (BT say up to 100 meters away). I have been able to connect from the car park at McDonalds, Little Chefs, Hotels and Pubs. If you already have a laptop and get a Wi Fi card you can try out these pay to use Hot Spots without paying. You will be able to get connected and access the "welcome" page of the provider without incuring any charge. To actually use these services the charges do vary quite a bit, averaging around £6(60 minutes) - £10(unlimited) per day (24hrs) if you only want an occasional connection.
for example see:

If you intend to use tis a lot, you can get a WiFi card with an external aerial, usually fitted with a mag mount. This extends the distance considerably.

These are also used "wardrivers" who drive around looking for an recording unsecured WiFi networks.
