Hi all
Now mobile internet can be had for £17 for the year in the uk (dongle £5 unlocked free, sim card £2 then top up £10 gives you internet for a year) Has anyone sorted cheap access in Europe?
I don't really need the the Internet when travelling in the UK but I can see that it is very useful when abroad to find Aires or infomation when the language barrier causes a problem.
I woulld be happy to pay a daily rate as I probably wouldn't use it every day.
I have looked at buying a local sim card but it doesn't seem that easy.
Any ideas????

Depends which country you're going to, JP. There's loads of information about various countries if you read back a bit.
We are heading to Italy but will spend some time in France too.

The information fro France is on here - you just have to do a bit of work.
Italy internet

Hi

Italy is easy. You can buy a pay as you go SIM on the WIND network. www.wind.it - the tariffs are understandable even though they are in Italian. You need a passport and a codice fiscal though - the latter is like a tax code. I have heard reports that you can get by without this though.

Have a read of www.prepaidgsm.net

Hi JP.

Could you tell me how you get mobile internet for £17 a year. Which provider do you use. We have a dongle and run it with T mobile at the moment. Do you have a monthly contract and a download limit with your provider.

Hi
Here goes
Get your 3 dongle from HERE £4.95
Unlock it HERE for free
Buy an iPhone simcard from eBay for £2 and put £10 credit on it and get free internet for a year.
Or buy an iPhone simcard on eBay already topped up for £12
It is all on the money saving experts website HERE

I tried to get my "free" 3 dongle but the site would not accept my details, which included my Vigin mobile number. Do you have to have a 3 Pay as you go mobile to allow access to the offer. The greyed sentence on the first page of the 3 website seems to imply that.

No I quite happly ordered one a few weeks ago and I do not have a 3 phone.

Hi Derek

Just tried again using MS Internet Explorer instead of AOL and it worked - not sure if the problem was AOL or a fault on the 3 website earlier! Anyway dongle on its way.

Thanks

Re: years uk mobile internet £17 but anyone got european acc

James,

Cheers for the info. I've ordered the dongle and downloaded the unlocker. However, I already have a PAYG T-mobile SIM which caps at £1 per day for data transfer - I got it about 3 years ago and only use it for GPRS internet connection. It uses £1 in about 20 minutes, then is free until 23:59 hrs. Will this work, or have I missed the point about getting an iPhone card?

Dougie.

Right - I've missed the point, haven't I? I've now ordered an o2 iPhone Sim card, but am now thinking it should have been a 3 card??

Still ain't got the plot entirely. :( Will the o2 card be ok?

Dougie.
Just ordered my iphone sim card.

£2.79 so not going to get the internet for £17 for the year. :D :D

The latest offer on the iPhone sim is free internet for the year for only a £10 top up. Better still the £10 is still available for calls if you pop it into any unlocked phone and it never runs out unlike the 3 sims that run out after 30 days. The only thing is that as it is a free offer they reserve the right to withdraw it at any time.

I'm new to Mobile Broadband. I have a PAYG Virgin mobile (paid by Direct Debit each month) which charges 30p/day for up to 25MB/day internet access.

With my "free" 3 dongle (ordered) unlocked could I put my Virgin mobile sim card in the dongle and get internet access from Virgin for 30p/day? Would it be 3g broadband speeds?

I appreciate the alternative would be to buy an iphone sim card with 12 months "free" mobile broadband after a £10 top up. However, on Ebay some of the iphone sim card sellers warn that O2 might stop the free access if they spot you are using a dongle and not an iphone.

Also after the free 12 months O2 will start to charge.

Any advice welcomed.

I don't believe that o2 say they will charge after 12 months but say they may withdraw the offer at any time. Whatever happens you get free access until they do and if it is a year they is cheap.
The speed you will get with your sim will all depend what mobile coverage you have in the area you are using it. The top speed is usually only in areas of high population but just as the old mobile phone coverage spread rapidly as people took up mobile phones I am sure 3g will soon spread to most of the country.

Internet

Hi

So for a tenner, internet access for a year - connected via an iphone, but how would the operator know?

Next question, what are the APN settings needed in an unlocked dongle to get the SIM to connect?

Cheers
dongle

Greetings,

Just got my dongle through, unlocked it (I hope I have done this right!!) ordered an O2 sim off ebay, so hoping to get to try it out for weekend.

I could try the T-mobile sim as well, see if it works, I have the one with £1 a day deal.

It would be handy for when I am away from home again
T mobile

Hi

Remember you can have T Mobile for half price.

Using your T Mobile SIM card, text the word WEB to 441. For £2.50 you can surf the web for five days. Well, it is actually six days as the day you send the text is not counted - so, for example, send the text on Monday and as soon as you receive a text message back, your package is valid and you can surf all day Monday and then the next five days on top.

Cheers ears.
