Purleeeeeeeeeeeeese!!!

The sad tale of AVG and my compooper! I downloaded AVG professional because someone told me I should, I think it was PC Advisor mag cos they had a wee linkie for this version what you could get free gratis and for nothing!!

Being a canny Scot, (some may say cheapskate, but not after I scone em wif me bagpipes   ) I downloaded the thing. Now it seems to work perfectly, comes on when it's supposed to, does that virus stuff wif me e-mails but my gawd it is soooooooooooooooooooooooo slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow!! On average it takes 2 and a half hours to do a full scan. What it is scanning I dunno but it seems to be doing my compooper and half the western world or is it eastern?????? Geography not me strong point.

My questions to those compooper experts out there (including the ones who have lost will to live cos of me ramblings...............see above) is this normal.

Please help me, please, pretty please, pretty pretty please, after all I have helped some of you......ish!!! Snigger snigger!

Carol I am no expert either, and I use spyware and stuff like that.

What may be happening, is that your software is doing a very deep scan everytime it fires up. What, I think, that means, is that it looks at every single molecule of your computer, every time it searches.

There may be an option to reduce this deep scan to a lesser can of the parts that get exposed to problems most frequently. Then you can do a deep can once or twice a week when you're not using it.

Have a look in the set up for the programme and see if you can do a quick scan or similar.

Alternatively, if you dont turn the PC off, then you may be able to tell the AVD thing to only search at 0330 or something when you am asleep.

someone will give the absolute details of what you need to do tho' so if you wish, totally ignore me ramble.

Hello, I'm no computer expert (nor indeed expert at anything much!) but we downloaded AVG free onto our laptop and it doesn't seem to take very long to scan - minutes rather than hours I'd say - so perhaps yours has got a problem.

Sorry can't be more helpful but I'm sure someone who really knows what they're talking about will come along soon with an answer.

the free version is pretty slim on what you can adjust - as i recall (i've had the full version for years) it does a full scan once per day (when you turn it on), nothing you can do about it except click cancel every day - or let it run

the new version should run fairly quietly in the background so if poss just ignore it

A full scan can take a long time. Look around and see if you can find the option to schedule scans, and if possible turn off automatic full scanning. Just make sure you tell it to do a full scan now and again.

Auto updates can also be a problem - especially if it tries to update as your computer is booting up, and other progs also have the same idea!

My virus killer auto update is on, but all the other progs that were sceduled to auto-update are off.

Have you got avg ver 8? If so adjust the scan schedule either to manual or a time when you are not using the pc. It is not imperative that you do a full scan every day just once in a while as you have the resident shield and spyware etc. active all the time.

I agree with Zappy61. Or just right click on the icon in the task bar and use the stop all scans option whilst you are working. That is if you are using version 8.

As has been said above a full scan every day is a bit OTT. However I'd be pretty sure that the AVG scan is designed to run in the background and it should not noticeably slow down your normal use of your PC. In fact I would be surprised if it is not designed to give your browsing etc. priority and this may even be a reason why it would take longer.
AVG will check for viruses every time you open or run a program which gives you your main real time protection. I think the scan is really intended to pick up possible problems before you ever encounter them and definitely not to cause you problems.

Thanks everyone I have now set it to run twice a week and pulled the slider along to say fast scan. Did not even realise it had one of these!!! So hopefully that will sort me out. Think it is AVG version 8 professional.
