New (replacement) Sky HD box - pixellation problems

I took delivery today of my new (used) SKY+ HD box, to replace our existing Sky+ box which worked without any problems. I have an Oyster system on the van with a single LNB, as whilst a dual or quad would receive signals without difficulty, it could never find the satellite signal when seeking, after the dish was stored. The temporary workaround was to install a second fixed dish to the ladder at the rear of the van, which has worked perfectly (so not part of the issue here.... 8O ).

The viewing card is working correctly, and shows its number on the setup etc. I have carried out a New Installation, and am happy that everything is as it should be. EXCEPT - the problem I have is that a few programs - especially Channel 5 - are badly pixellating, as if an insufficient signal is being received. Setup indicates that both signals are as good as they ever were (and so they should be, as I hadn't moved either dish). I shut down the Oyster and got it to re-find though, just in case. A little better, but still one prog in ten is hardly watchable.

Ideas?

Hi We are also having problems with certain programs pixellating with our sky HD box. These are mostly movie channels. Have been onto sky and they don't want to know as its out of warranty (although we did take out extended warranty with other company) they said we should get on to them. We are also having problems recording, each morning it fails all programs due to record saying power cut as though its turning its self off and losing its settings.

Am getting pretty fed up with sky. Their customer service is apalling but they have the monopoly. We can't have any other system where we live so they have us over a barrel. We are paying a fortune a month for something that doesn't work properly.

Hi Dougie. I met up with the Whistlinggypsy whose flat screen tv was pixellating when he used it in conjunction with his camos dome, dreambox and regulater.

I took it back into Currys who tested it for me and it was a superb picture, nothing wrong with it. The only thing they could suggest was that it could be to do with interference from the voltage reg or a weak signal.

Sounds like the Sky box is not as sensitive as it could be. What size dish are you using? You could try a larger one to give you a little more umph!

:( :( :(

I've just found a thread on the dvd forums:-

I was getting bad pixellation/'no signal' blue screens on lots of channels channels but the worst ones were ch5, Dave, the UKTV*** channels and the History channels.
Same as me, exactly. Turns out these channels use the same transponder, and the solution was a new box.

Might be cheaper to get a bigger dish, they are not that expensive. If you are using a sky dish, I would most definitely get a new dish and LNB, 65cm minimum. Old LNBs are also not so sensitive as the latest ones.

I spent some time on the phone to Sky, finally getting to speak to a VERY nice girl who could not have been more helpful. Not only was she perfect, but she was Scottish too.

She could not understand how I was getting anything on the new box, as my card hadn't been paired - that wasn't the issue, but I found it a little amusing. She ran a full interactive diagnostic on the machine, and found that the Input 2 signal (from the temporary fixed dish on the back of the van) was very weak. It's always been weaker than the Oyster dish but has never caused a problem, but I had to accept it was causing one now - running on just Input 1 solved the pixelation on all channels, and swapping that "good" input to the other input position on the back of the box also continued to solve it.

Once I find my lost signal meter, I'll try setting it up again.

Watch this space.

Still sounds as though you have not enough margin of signal strength to override the foibles of the system including signal propagation which will vary with frequency, season and weather. You did not say what size dish you have?

Have you not moved into the house yet?

Both are 85cm.

Getting there. :) Extension & conservatory footings went in this week, sparkys & plumbers have started putting the wiring & piping back in the house, then the plasterers come for 3 weeks in a week's time. So - to answer your question - no :) but should be in by mid-November. Oh yes, and the new section of roof.... and... and...

With 85cms dishes cannot be signal strength then unless they are not aligned correctly, so you are back to poor box sensitivity, poor coax connections, or a problem with the coax itself.

Sounds like you are having a new house built not renovating an old one :)
