Thetford ventilation and SOG.

I've had SOGs which worked well enough.

But even so there have been smells in the van. For the last couple of vans I have removed the bits on the bottom that engage the ventilator.

No more smells, but always open the blade valve with the toilet lid down in case of blowback. No SOG on the current van because it has a Thetford swivel toilet and there isn't one for it as far as I can discover. Still no smell because to vent to the inside of the van. That's a whole toilet that swivels out of the way into a recess, I can find no information about it anywhere.

No fan Jean so no air flow except for the few moments when the blade valve is opened. Before with the Thetford vent in the bottom of the cassete pushed up we had constant smells in the van. The toilet is a standard Therford one but it is mounted on a swivel so that the whole unit can be swiveled back into a recess at the back of the bathroom so the shower can be used. The swivel seems to be Carthago designed. This arrangement means that the entire toilet aparatus is open to the inside of the van. The casette compartment vented through the standard vent to the inside which may be tolerated if the compartment is sealed. Because the toilet hinges and that is a Carthago one off there's no SOG for it, I think.

I may try to alter one to fit. I'll post a few photos of how it works if that's not clear.

Hi,

never seen this kind of toilet before. How do you get at the cassette for emptying?

But it should still be possible to connect a SOG floor vent model, with a rather long hose.

With the toilet half way it aligns with an exterior locker to remove the cassette. I think it's a Carthago invention for their Malinu camper range. I have my doubts about the durabity of the swivel.

Looks like it. It seems to be a modified C250 or C260.

But then, this would require a flexible water hose, so maybe the SOG hose can be laid along the water hose?

BTW, I have experience with both the original SOG, which is a registered trademark, and the Thetford ventilation system:

In my old van I had installed original SOG by myself, and was happy with it. And when we ordered the new MH, the vendor offered us a "SOG" as an option and we accepted the offer. However, it turned out that the vendor did not know that SOG was a trademark and when the MH was delivered it had a Thetford ventilation, not an original SOG.

We decided to give it a try with the Thetford ventilation, but soon regretted it: While the original SOG fan is almost inaudible even inside the MH, the Thetford fan was so loud that it could wake up even the second next site neighbour if used at night. We filed a warranty complaint with the dealer. They replaced the fan, but the replacement was even louder. They replaced it again, this time it was less noisy, albeit still a lot louder than original SOG.

However, fan no. 3 packed up completely after just a few weeks. Now I insisted on getting an original SOG as replacement, using the fact that they had used the trademark "SOG" in the purchase contract as leverage. They complied, and since then we are happy again. (Afterwards, they erased the name SOG from all their advertizing material and contract templates...)

Best Regards,
Gerhard

what cassette has it got, our recently bought 2016 Frankia didn’t have a SOG and they and the thetford kits are quite expensive so I did my own Thetford version.
a cheap Alixpress fan and micro switch and a Thetford carbon filter. I used a piece of aluminium tube flared to register under the fan.
works well.

I think I could add a fan to this quite easily. But we have no smells now. So I probably won't. The only problem is remembering to close the lid before opening the blade valve is case of a pressure build up, but so far no problem, and that's two or three years now.
