Hello all,

I have five weeks off next June and we can't decide between a tour of France, Scotland or Ireland.

I thought I'd ask the audience. What do you recommend?

Thanks,

Ian.

Hi Hub

Have to agree with Dave there France first then Ireland, Scotland could be one to avoid in June I believe its the mighty midgy season. Not been myself but believe they can be vicious

I would be in two minds,
I love France but am begining to want something more.
I returned to Ireland last year as a tourist for the first time and while it is expensive in any respects it was a wonderful change, So much so this year it was between France and Ireland and only the cost of getting from the continent to Ireland as opposed to just driving across the border that swung France for me.
One of the things I enjoyed about Ireland was being able to communicate fully and fit in.
Also although the roads are still mostly C... off the beaten track it is a great country to discover (I should work for the tourist board). The other thing is that in 5 weeks you would be able to cover most of the country at a leisurely pace. And if you have never been it is a great opportunity,

It really depends on what you are after from the time and what you really enjoy to do.
Once you define your objectives then a decision is easier to make,

Just to endorse what IrishMike says, when I declared France first and Ireland second (Jen was spot on when she said Scotland is in peak midge season in June), the thought did go through my head that if, unusually, I had a 5 week stint available, whereas normally I only have a maximum of 2, then Ireland it would be. Two weeks is too short to get "into" Ireland, but 5 weeks is perfect.

However, with nothing else to go on from Ian, I stand by France first.

Where To Go

I must agree with the general concencus.

1. France,
Never been to Ireland,
Scotland great exept for Midges and Rain. But glorious when the Sunshines.
England wonderfull, just to much traffic and to many people.

We have visited France every year for the last 20 plus and although we do like and visit other parts of Europe its France that we Love.

Back to France again on Friday.

Visit them all but go to France first.

Regards
Steve

Thanks for all the replies. Our main interests are walking, windsurfing and visiting historic landmarks. (Any exploring really)

France is winning the audience vote, but I am very interested in the comments about Ireland. I have been there, but as a soldier in the North, so my view of the country was a bit distorted. It will certainly bring back some memories.

I'm still undecided, but Ireland is creeping to the fore.

Living in Orkney, I would recommend Scotland in June, especially the Northern Isles, Orkney & Shetland, with about 21 hrs of daylight.

The weather is always a risk but June tends to be dry, Orkney is a World Heritage Site for it's historical remains and the Shetland landscape is stunning. Shetland also allows trips to the Faroes or Iceland.

The only downside is that ferries can be relatively expensive - Pentland Ferries is cheapest for Orkney, and we pay the highest prices in the UK for fuel despite it all comng ashore here!

Couple this with the Highlands and Western Isles for fabulous scenery and the generally empty roads and you have perfection.

Hope this helps

Hub and I went over on the Fishguard/Rosslare ferry in July to visit his family in Derry.
You've done a tour over there already so you know what the weather's like............. most of the year it's even worse than here in Wales!
If there's gonna be any sunshine June/July is defo the most favourable time of year to go.
Don't know where/when you were posted up North but it's sooooo different now from 20/30 years ago.
Loads of tourists.........and loads of places for safe overnight parking.

Lovely down South too but overnight parking is more restricted apparently due to trying to keep gypsies moving. Plenty of campsites tho'!

I'd still opt for France..........
