Hi, we are newbies looking to purchase our first motorhome. We have decided the Compass Avantgarde 400 RL is maybe our way forward but we're unsure which way to go with the engine size. Is the 2L more economical or does it struggle, is the 2.8L much different in fuel consumption. Would love to hear of some "real life" mpg for each size engine and your comments regarding engine size. Many thanks.

Hi Madders

Our first Autosleepers Ravenna was powered by a Peugeot 1.9 TD engine
we found it to be underpowered, it really struggled on inclines and we were continually having to change down through the gears. We now have a Ravenna powered by the 2.8HDI engine and it is a different beast altogether, a pleasure to drive and it returns a consistent 30 mpg. Personally I would not go for an engine below 2.8 ltrs on a motorhome

I've got an Avantgarde 140 which I think is the successor to the 400 (actually I have a feeling that the 150 has an L-shaped lounge similar to the 400RL, but otherwise identical).

Mine's got a 2.2 Peugeot diesel, although I'm not sure if it was the same unit that was fitted back in 2002 (like Russell it's news to me that there was ever a 2.8 used by Explorer group...you learn something new every day).

In any case, I don't find it underpowered at all. Cruises happily at 60-70 on motorway, plus I pull a Smart...know about it when going up hills with the towcar on back (but only that I need to drop down a gear), but in absence of that it's fine. Get around 30mpg with the motorhome on its own, 25mpg towing.

We had a 2004 Peugeot Compass Avantgarde with a 2.0l diesel engine and it was OK but really struggled uphills. When we changed it, we had the 2.3l Fiat cab on a Swift Suntor and it was a lot lot better. :D

Strangley, mpg was about the same on both - anywhere between 25 and 30mpg depending on speed driven at and types of roads. Sticking to 60mph or less gives best mpg in my experience.

I didn't think that there was a 2.8 fitted to these, but if it has, performance should be better and mpg worse.
