Diesel fuel type and V5 document

Hi all.

Sure this has been asked a ton of times before, but I need to know what to fill in on the "Fuel Type" section of the V5. And I did search beforehand - honest

We have received the V5 thru for our new motorhome and for some reason it's been registered as fuel type "Petrol". Good for dodging london emission stuff, but should probably get it changed.

I vaguely remember the old van having a fuel type of "Heavy Oil" or something along those lines, so do I stick that in the V5 "Changes to Current Vehicle" section, or "Diesel" ?

Also, do you think I should add a covering letter to say the van has always been diesel, or do you think the fact it's only a couple of weeks old will be good enough for them to realise it was a mistake in the first instance of registering?

Many thanks in advance,
Steve

Hi B6x,

Yep my v5 says "Heavy Oil" and it is the same engine as yours. Will the tax cost more I wonder ? How much is yours now, mine was ÂŁ180.

You could be in for some fun, I changed a Land rover which was Tax exempt, from diesel to petrol and ended up having to send in Photos of the vehicle and engine and seating !! I had to return the v5 3 times before they got i right, they kept altering other stuff on it for no reason.

The other possibility was that I may have had to take to one of DVLC's inspection places, thankfully it never came to that.

If you can send some documentation that shows the vehicle has always been diesel and it was an error on registration then things should go smoothly. I think its to do with keeping an eye open for "ringers".

Cheers P

Darn. Meant to have a look at the tax disc before leaving home this morning. Pretty sure I recall it being ÂŁ180 paid by the dealer.

I've now sent the V5C off this morning to the DVLA, but put in a covering letter stating that the van was only first registered on 1st Sept, so incorrect information was given at the time. Also asked them to correct the spelling of my name and put in the correct postcode!

Hopefully, that'll be the end of the issue and a fully correct V5 will pop through the door in a couple of weeks. Got a niggling feeling that life's just not that kind to me though.

Thanks for the help.

Regards,
Steve
