I have sort of run out of authors whose work I know I like. I am hoping some of you might recommend a few new ones.

I particularly like Donna Leon, Andrea Camilleri, Val McDermid, Sue Grafton, Geroge Macdonald Fraser, Alexander McCall Smith, Peter James, Mark Billingham, James Patterson.

I also like spy novels Le Carre, Frederick Forsyth etc.

Not particularly keen on American detective stories, even though I make an exception in the case of Sue Grafton.

Can't stand badly written books. I always want to correct them and send them back to the author.

Recommendations for well written books appreciated. Thanks, Alan.

Thanks Tony. Unfortunately I love Pratchett too and have read all his books. More than a few twice.

I am afraid I may say that rather a lot on this thread but please don't be put off by that.

The reason is that I read around two books a week and have been doing so since I was 17. My addiction to reading came about as a result of having had to spend several months in hospital then and it has stayed with me. A really good book only lasts one day, Alan.

Philip Kerr for the Bernie Gunther novels.
Bernie is a Berlin policeman, with anti nazi sympathies.
Detective novels with history and a quirky sense of humour. British author

Robert Crais for the the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike detective stories. Yes I know that they are American but great stories, again with a quirky sense of humour. American author

Frank Dibdin and his Auralio Zen novels.
Italian police novels with a great insite to Italian politics of the day, in some ways superior to Donna Leon, and certainly predate Donna. English author

Lee Child and his Reacher novels. Ex American Army MP great adventure/crime stories, almost successor to the old Wild West stories but bought up to date to the modern world.
Written by English author.

Ian Rankin and his Rebus novels. Gritty Edinborough detective stories. Scottish author

James Lee Burke and hid Dave Robicheaux novels, these are set in Louisiana and are detective novels but exceedingly well written and dark.
So are his Billy Bob Holland and Sheriff Hackberry Holland novels, set in Montana and Texas/Mexico border. All his novels deal with good and evil and the tensions and choices associated with law enforcers dealing with evil people

Also try Michael Connoly for his Harry Bosch detective novels and the Lincoln Lawyer.

Anything by R. J. Ellory great stories and as far as I am concerned exceptionally well written.

Kate Moss writes good stories, so does Peter Robinson(detective in North Yorkshire )

Umberto Eco, the Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum again well written

However I tend to like the story rather than spcifically looking at spelling and grammar, but do take a look at the Authors I have suggested, you never know!

If you like historical novels just let me know and I can provide a separate list.

I would recommend a kindle, then you can go on eBay and get thousands of books, all out of copyright, for about ÂŁ5

Either way enjoy your reading

Thanks Bob, there are several authors there I don't know. I will try Phillip Kerr to begin with as I love that kind of thing.

I also very much like Robert Harris, Rankin, Seymour and Michael Connolly, Patricia Cornwell, Bernard Cornwell, and Kathy Reichs, Alan.

Edit: I like Dibdin but haven't read the series you recommend so that's great. Thanks.

Thanks Westkirby, I like Follett too.

I particularly enjoy Fantasy books

But not Fi Fantasy, so thats Terry Prachits Disk World Novels out for me

no point listing authors unless you enjoy them

although James Martins Song of Ice And Fire 4 part epic (5 Really) as book three is in two parts does it for me

And I have an embarrassing collection of top fantasy authors books

The two latest books I have read were excellent although the vast range of characters needed concentration Pillars ofthe earth and World without end

Also enjoyed Wilber Smiths Eygption novels

Possible authors

Hi

My suggestions (as I read most of your first set of authors) - David Baldacci (varied subjects - the Sean King set are particularly good (read in order as are the Camel club)), and Vince Flynn (not detectives - but CIA operations).

Hope that is useful

Bill & Patsy

It has been suggested on here before that there is a free download HERE of Calibre for ebooks which will transfer from any format to any format I find it extremely useful.

It also emulates an ebook reader on your computer so you can read books easily.

If you want any sci-fi or fantasy I can send you a file with quite a few in it. Just send me a PM.

Thanks all, quite a few authors who are new to me. Much appreciated and plenty to be going on with.

Thanks for the sci-fi offer Frank. It's never really appealed but who knows in the future.

Cheers, Alan.

Another author and series I've enjoyed is Ann Cleeves and the 5 books in the series:-

Shetland Island

1. Raven Black (2006)
2. White Nights (2008)
3. Red Bones (2009)
4. Blue Lightning (2010)
5. Dead Water (2013)

She's written about 25 novels but these are the ones I've enjoyed. In fact I'm reading Dead Water at the moment.
Murder in the Shetland Islands.

I've just finished reading the James Bond series by Ian Fleming.

Don't dismiss them if you've seen all the movies, they're quite a bit different. A little blast from the past too as they were written in the 1950's, but still brilliant today.

I also enjoy John Grisham and Michael Crichton, some of this books are un-put-downable (although I know that's not a word!).

Or if you like motorhome adventures, we've just published a book of our travels around Morocco - A monkey ate my breakfast
