Oil In Spanish Gas Bottle

Hi All.

For the past few weeks we have had gas problems with the fridge and now we were only able to get 1 gas ring on the hob to run on full. If we put 2 on they only worked on half power. When the gas was on there was a strange gurgling sound coming from the regulator. I turned the gas off and removed the spanish on off regulator from the gas bottle and noticed oil deposits around the outlet on the gas bottle.
I started to unscrew the pipe going into the fixed regulator and oil started to pour out. I next removed the gas outlet pipe and more oil poured out all over the the gas locker floor. I got ann to get a load of old cloths to mop up the oil. I removed the regulator and this was also full of oil. This oil is a very light oil much like the type of oil that is used to lubricate compressors and stunk of gas. I next removed the gas feed downpipe that goes into the M/H and this also had some oil in it. I spent the rest of the day getting oil out of the pipes and putting it all back together. I put another new bottle of bas on. Guess what everything worked. As i have 3 spanish gas bottles i am not sure where i got the faulty one from. We are only in spain for another 12 days so i do not think it will be worth trying to trace where it came from and start to make some form of claim because as soon as you start to complain the spanish pretend they do not understand english. I hope no one else gets this problem as it has taken some sorting. A couple of other campers do not seem to think this can happen and i somehow got the oil in the regulator and pipes myself.

Oil in the bottles is not unusual. We get through about 4 bottles a week during the winter and I should think one bottle in 10 has enough oil in it for the oil to come out into the regulator. Then it's down to cleaning, as you've discovered. I put a downward loop in the hoses after the regulators (multiple bottle set up) in the hope that most of the oil won't get past there. It seems to work.

Perhaps someone knows more about why the oil is there in the first place. I don't think you should get too upset about it because, as you say, you won't get anywhere.

From what I read on the 'net the other week whilst looking for something else, it would seem that the "oil" is the stuff they put in with the gas to create the smell because in its natural state it is of course odourless. Maybe the amounts are not very well regulated.
