I cannot for the life of me believe that any seller of TV's or Freesat boxes etc would NOT have the full range of catch up.

I have just (as in three days ago) bought a Humax Freesat box, it also has Freetime (which is basically catch up TV but you use it exactly like the "normal" channel selection process) it is simply brilliantly easy to use.

So if the TV you are looking at has Freetime go for it. To be fair I did have to update the software (dead easy via Ethernet wireless connection) in order to get all of the catch up channels.

I wanted a Panasonic. But Mrs. TM Uses ITV player a lot. So, I bought a lightening lead for her iPhone so she can use that. But, Some other catch ups like 4OD will not allow this type of connection.

4OD does now support playback on TV via iphone with lightning av adaptor. A recent update to the app gave this improvement. BBC iplayer and itvplayer also support this, the only one i'm not sure of is 5OD but there's nowt worth watching on there anyway

It is all down to ITV being a commercial broadcaster and going for the money.
Which obviously Samsung won the rights to iplayer on their TVs.

The HDMI inputs on the LG all stopped workng, and it would cost more than the TV is worth to get them repaired. The LG TV still works, but can't connect our Apple TV, TalkTalk box etc. Neither LG nor Amazon, where we bought it, will do anything after 12 months.

We only really used the TalkTalk box with the LG to get the players - the LG only had BBC iplayer.

Anyway, the new Samsung we bought is better in every way than the LG was: sharper picture, better sound, more Smart features, and all the players - BBCiplayer, ITV Player, 4OD etc.

We bought it from John Lewis, so got a free 5 year guarantee. Wish we'd bought our previous TV here, instead of from rotton old Amazon!

The salesman in John Lewis was very helpful, no hard sell, and gave us a discount to match Richer Sounds. We asked him how Samsung compared with other makes such as Sony, Panasonic etc. He said he thought Samsung were the best for the price in his opinion, and that 75% of the tvs sold in his branch of John Lewis were Samsung.

A bit late now, but did you consider your rights under the 'Sale of Goods Act 1979?

Four years' use for a TV is ridiculous, and you would probably have been covered if you argued your case.

We were caught out in the same way, bought an LG TV not knowing that ITV player wasn't on it. We then bought 2 Samsung tv's, kitchen & bedroom, only then did we realise the situation. It's a blooming pain as now my wife want to Change the LG for a bigger Samsung as she can't read the screen and I hate those 48" screens, She'll win in the end though.

On Freesat and Sky satellite receivers and TVs - live TV comes from satellite, catch up from internet.

For mobile devices, live and catch up come from internet.

However, IIRC the Freesat boxes need a satellite signal to initiate the iplayer services.

IF you just want catchup, then with a VPN, look at a "Now TV" box...

OK I guess I will just have to live without catch-up TV. I had assumed wrongly that the new generation of Humax boxes might have been able to do this. It's no big deal as we record so much and half the channels are repeat progs anyway. We do have Freesat, Freeview and Sky free.

I can if pushed get iPlayer and ITV player via a VPN and Tunnelbear. But it's rarely that important and much prefer watching TV on the big screen.

The big new ish TV is a so called 'smart TV' but it's a pain to fiddle about till we get a very limited amount of internet sites. I give up and go make a cuppa.

I have just bought a samsung UE48H6700 television from John Lewis with a 5 year guarantee included. It has a lot of features which i will not use, but that is the same for a lot of modern technology since we bought scientific calculators in the seventies.

The television works well, among other things I was a attracted by its many catch up tv programmes and internet availability. I have used these features with good results. I have been surprised at the good quality of some of the youtube videos.

The price seemed good and it came out well in reviews, both which? and others online. It does seem a bit odd that Amazon is selling it for £1149 when John Lewis were selling it for £645. This proves the value of shopping around.

I have not tried recording with the usb port yet, but I have the feeling that it can only be played back on that television, not on any other television or device, (I could be wrong).

If there is anything else that I can help with please ask.

Would like to ask another question please.

Any ideas as to how I might record and put films onto a USB or external drive while at home to be played while away on a large screen Laptop as and when I get it.?

My Sharp 70" TV has various HDMI, USB and ethernet plugs but seem to be only inputs and not outputs as far as I can see from the manual.

My Humax PVR does have a USB output socket but last time I tried to record it would not play on anything other than another Humax. I think it was a Humax format.

We bought the UE40H6400AKXXU. A smaller screen than you want, but all the features will be the same for a 48" model.

Thanks, Roger, we tried quoting the act, but wasting our time with Amazon. We'd have to take them to court, a total faff.

Same thing when my Kindle went phut after 15 months, Amazon would do nothing, under the Sale of Goods Act. Furthermore, Amazon is registered in Luxembourg, where the minimum guarantee by law is 2 years. I quoted that fact to them as well, but it made no difference.

I told them I would never buy anything from Amazon again, and I never have!

It is annoying about the LG tv, but we can still use it as a tv, just can't connect anything needing an HDMI connection.

Anyway, the new Samsung is a much better tv than the LG, and we paid less for it from John Lewis, with a free 5 year guarantee, than we did for the LG 4 years ago from Amazon, with only 12 months guarantee! Linda

 

I may wait until April when the old goes on sale and the new ranges come out.
