It's been slow for a while now, all virus and malware check are done daly, and show very little, which is sorted straight away, rebooting doesn't seem to help.

My system is:-

Lenovo laptop with core i7 processor
8gb Ram
750gb HDD
Nvidia Gforce graphics
Win7 64bit
Google Chrome browser (I'd like to keep that)

Virgin media supplies the cable internet, modem was replaced two day ago, line checked and found to be okay at the same time.

My start up takes 49 seconds according to the Lenovo counter, so quick enough there, but why is my interweb so damned slow?

Any ideas??

I've also disable all plugins except Adobe Flash Player - Version: 17.0.0.169.

The only extension is Adblock plus.

Browsing data has been cleared back to the beginning of time :D

Also ran https://www.google.com/chrome/srt/ but it found no programs.

I also run Avast free
Malwarebytes
SuperAntiSpyware

Wish we could get speeds like that. We live in Essex about 2 miles from the exchange and are grateful for 4 meg. with copper cables. No chance of fibre for years.

Don't forget that if there's a lot of traffic on the internet particularly sites you are visiting then the responses will be slow. Just like queuing in a busy shop!

CPU is at around 3% spiking to 9%, ram at 3.4-3.7gb so not over stressed.

Do you have Windows automatic updates enabled? If so it's possible that the system has been trying to download and install those. After a reboot the system will simply try to download and install them again - and again and again! On my laptop I have automatic updates disabled as I have found that they frequently slow the machine down. Another possibility is automatic backup to another hard drive or partition. Or available disk space is low which will slow the machine down. On some machines Microsoft Security Essentials / Windows Defender seems to bring them to a halt so try switching those off next time it slows down and see what happens.

Yes I do have auto update turned on Peter, always have, but next time it goes slow, I'll give it a try, not got any auto back up though.

Kev

The safest option with auto updates is to select the option for windows to advise of updates but only to download when you are ready. The windows update panel will show all the downloads available for when you are ready to download them. This avoids the pain of downloading happening whilst you are trying to access the internet for something else. This is how my computers are always setup. Windows will nag you to change the setting but just ignore it.

Sorry missed the last few posts, they must have dropped of the Active page  but I'm on Chrome, install updates only when I say, and defrag all done before the OP.

One other thought is that when I experiencing really slow speeds I rang BT, turns out they had been doing some remedial work at the exchange and whilst doing it had "turned down" the speed of downloads etc, when they checked they had forgot to return it to its original speed, that's what they told me. They told me when it was going to "turned up" again and rang straight away to check it was ok..and it was
