Right click function not working

Yesterday I got a message saying that my laptop had 20 drivers that needed updating. So I followed the on line instructions and did them all. Now the right click function has stopped working. I have had a long "on line" chat with someone from Microsoft (I presume) and they took control of my computer and did all sorts of things but couldn't fix the problem. They suggested that it could be a hardware issue but that would be a bit of a coincidence.
Can any of the resident experts offer any help please.

Laptop is a Samsung about 4 years old
Windows 7

Given that you are not sure who you gave control of your laptop to, I think you should take immediate steps to protect your privacy. I would suggest changing all passwords as a matter of urgency, checking that any on-line bank accounts haven't been compromised, similarly with any on line stores such as Amazon that may have your credit card details etc etc. Also be prepared for your contacts / address book to have been compromised.

Obviously if you can satisfy yourself as to the integrity of the person who took control of your laptop then there may be nothing to worry about.

I have tried a system restore and checked the "mouse" configurations, but problem still exists.

In answer to Stanners very useful post, the message came up in critical updates and the company I used was slimware utilities who PC world seem to have no issues with. However on digging a bit further, some folk say they can't uninstall their programme but that seems to be the only issue with them.

If it is a hardware problem, is this any easy fix, or is there anything else I could try??

May I suggest you could try another mouse but this is only a guess.
Unlike you I run Windows 8.1 and the moment an upgrade took place (from Windows 8 to 8.1) my mouse only worked intermittently on the right hand side of the screen. I searched the internet for help without success, so I bought a Microsoft Mouse with horrid flowers all over it, the only Microsoft mouse PC Underworld had in stock. End of problem, mouse worked perfectly.
This is really only a guess following your updating various drivers.

I have seen this gaspode, but it doesn't make any mention of them raiding bank accounts or hacking emails etc. All I need to know is how to get back my right click function.

I don't doubt they're not criminals, possibly just incompetent?

Like several others, I think the obvious first thing to do is try a different mouse.

Secondly I'd say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" (or more specifically don't let someone else fix it remotely). I bet you had no issues before they told you your drivers were out of date did you? Why worry about drivers (or anything else for that matter) being out of date if it's not causing you a problem? Have you noticed any improvement in the way your PC runs since those 20 drivers were updated?

PS: I'll make an exception for virus definintions being updated - that one IS important.

It would have been "useful" if you had shared that information earlier.

It appeared that you have simply responded to a pop-up and then handed over control of your computer to "somebody" you thought "might" be Microsoft.

I had to buy a new mouse when I had a similar problem.
Are you, and Alan, saying that an "old" style mouse can be used with a laptop which has a touchpad set up sort of mousy thingy??
Not an old fashioned one but a USB one for sure. Just plug it in and you can use it or the inbuilt one as you please without removing it.

Thanks Ray,
I actually deleted my reply to 747 as I found out that I can use a mouse instead of the touch pad.
Looks like that is my only solution.

You may be a bit wary of introducing yet another "fixer" after your troubles but I found the following free bit of software a real boon when my daughter's PC had major problems with drivers.

www.iobit.com/driver-booster.php

It looks at all your drivers and goes off and tracks down the latest versions etc. A lot of PC doctors / fixers use it. If you do try it, only download the driver part, there are lots of add-ons you don't need. Once you are back and up-and-running you can uninstall it.

Well, thanks very much you Yorkshire ****. That's you off my Xmas card list.
What's up you miserable old git?? I followed up your suggestion and found that I could use a mouse with my laptop so deleted my reply to you to save you the time and considerable trouble in replying to me. Or is it because I didn't thank you?? Well I have now so get my address back out of your bin.

Have you tried taking mouse out rebooting computer and letting software reload. Drivers
That idea occurred to me too, but not sure if your remote access session included that.

If not, if you uninstall the touchpad in "device manager" and then reboot the pc, it will find the touchpad and reinstall the necessary drivers. May not cure your problem but perhaps worth a try.

The first thing I would try is uninstall, reboot, reinstall.

If that doesnt work try Device manager, locate the touch pad in the list, go to actions on the top menu bar and click update driver and choose "search automatically"

Personally I cannot bear using the touch pad and always use a conventional mouse with my laptop
