Hi there, we are looking at going skiing in Austria this year in our motorhome. Has anyone stayed around the St Anton area at all, if not, does anyone have any recommendations for other bases for skiing and snowboarding (intermediate/experienced) for motorhomers (novice) :)

Thanks

Have skiied St.Anton (superb) but never with the motorhome. Have used motorhome in Salzburgerland. Year round campsite in Westendorf gives easy access to Skiwelt area, 250km plus of pistes including new (2006) connection to Kitzbuhel slopes. Skiwelt includes Soll, Ellmau, Scheffau and much more. Then to excellent site on lake at Zell am See, local slopes a short bus ride away, (bus-stop at campsite entrance), Saalbach about 40mins by bus, again from campsite. If conditions are'nt great snowsure glacier at Kaprun is just the other side of Zell. Enjoy.

Camping Itter

We finally decided to book this site at Itter.

There are others in the area but this one is at a fairly low level - we didnt fancy getting the RV up & down some of the mountain roads!

They gave us a good quote and were very pleasant to talk to.

We have checked out the season lift pass rates & this seemed to be very reasonable with access to the large Ski Welt area.

Found the link to the lift pass prices- hope this helps

Itter is very small, hardly even a village. Theres a lift that will bring you up into the Skiwelt and the route back at the end of the day is a classic.
However, as with all the resorts in this area, altitudes are quite low, (Itter at 700m). If you get a bad season like last year only yhe higher runs will be open, even then the highest lift only goes to 1800m and services mainly black runs. Hintertux or Kaprun would probably be the nearest glacier resorts, both some distance away.
Make sure to buy a season lift pass, (often discounted even further if you buy now), it'll save you a packet in the long run.

Well that was the plan !!

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately the campsite has had second thoughts and have said the RV is too big. At least they had the decency to let us know before we got there.

Camping Brixen further up towards Kitzbuhl is now looking favourite but despite their assurances that the RV will fit easily, the pictures on their website make it look rather tight.

Has anyone been ? www.camping-brixen.at

Ski Austria

If you are looking for a top ski resort for intermediate to expert skiers, with a top Snowboard park, then you should try Solden in the Otztal it has a fantastic campsite 100m from the main gondala. The resort has snow sure condition on the glacier, So good will be there for Christmas and New Year

Skiing inAustria

We can recommend Saalbach Hinterglem and Leogang in Austria we have skied this area for many years and it has something for everyone. There is also what is called a Ski Circus which actually links up all of these ski regions so you can ski all day and not actually go on the same run twice. Also if you go to Leogang you can overnight in the motorhome at the foot of the mountain by the ski lifts all for 4euros a night. You have all facilities during the opening hours (except electric) but none once the shops apres ski has closed. I can really say it is lovely here. We are thinking of going over Xmas but we are not sure about the new winter tyre law that they have in Germany / Austria. If anyone knows the answer to this we would appreciate it.

Andy,

We passed through St Anton at the end of the of the 04/05 season on our way from France to Munich. To park near the town in a van was 30 euros for the day (no overnight camping), so I got my partner to ask in the Tourist Office - the reaction from the Chanel suited hostess was (in Lady Bracknell voice, looking down nose at piece of dirt) 'A CAMPER VAN!'.

I asked a German in a tatty VW transporter where we could wild camp but he thought we'd be lucky.

There's a camp site some way down the valley but I think it's not walkable to the lifts.

So we gave up.

Friends go (not camper based) say Sollenkopf is good, has a camp site close to the lifts and links into St Anton. Spent an evening digging on the net but all the info is too vague to be sure. Lots of sites say they are 'convenient for the slopes' but they would say that wouldn't they.

Let us know if you get anywhere because we'd like to give it a go. The area looks stunning.

From what I have found out about winter tyres is that the most important thing to remember is that if you do not have the right tyres for the conditions you will have problems with insurance if involved in an accident.

I suppose the answer is don't drive in icy or snowy conditions. Good advise !
If you do not have winter tyres and have an accident you are automaticly considered 50% to blame.

I live in Austria from Dec - Easter there are loads of minor shunts and the odd biggy.

Regarding skiing we are currently in negotiation with three campsites to put a package together for RV's

Google Snowslippers.
