Trumatic water heater

Hi Everyone,
When my Trumatic water heater is heating up either on gas or electric there is a horrible hot pungent plastic type smell .
The smell appears to come from the foam insulation on the ducting from the top of the heater to the fan for the blown air heating. The heating is not switched on.
There appears to be no air locks and the overheating trip is not tripping on electric so the heater is not overheating. has any one else experienced this problem.
Many thanks Crimpleken

Yes, we had exactly the same problem from new in 2007 and, despite recall, visit to the Truma factory and endless visits to the dealer, we have it still.

We too have a Bessacarr. Our dealer reckoned it was over-heating wooden bedslats so we put in a layer of insulation between them and the heater.

Truma reckoned that there was not enough ventilation in the locker ( underbed) where the heater is fitted. We added more vents in the locker sidewall.

Truma also thought the heater was too close to the bed struts but this was because the dealer had reassembled the heater wrongly and the top was touching the bed slats ( and being compressed by the bed when anyone sat/slept on it) This was dealt with and there is now- a little- clearance

We live with it now.....not satisfactory but, if it is any consolation, there are others on MHF with the problem.

Hello chaps/chappettes

Yes we have the same. We have got used to it as well - we have had the recall - apparently its not unsafe its just smelly - we know that the hot water is ready when we get the smell. The more we use it the less it smells but it does still smell.

Ours has its own cupboard under the wardrobe. Next van we would not have it- its the C6002.

As Grizzly writes we have had this problem more or less from new. It has varied and is more or less usable now though not perfect. On gas or high power electricity with water only the smell comes on when the water is hot. Usually low power electricity does not give a problem. Air heating is usually OK except for a bit of a hot dust smell on starting.
As Phil suggests it is worth checking that you have not got an unmodified heater. (It should be marked "TRUMA CHECKED")
We have had about 20 parts changed and then the whole thing reassembled by Truma UK who are off the A50 [DE65 5BG] between Uttoxeter and Derby.
( appointments only). They gave it a thorough check and it worked fine when we left them even on gas - which is usually the worst. We have however had the smell again if only in a reduced form as above.
My other complaint about these heaters is that if you have them on air and water it takes a long time for the water to heat up.
I would not want this system again but the new model may be better.
I would contact Truma if possible within three years of the van being new.

I think this smell to a greater or lesser extent is widespread. I know several motorhomers and all have the smell as the water heater gets to its hottest. Its not so bad when the water and heating are being used. I have checked to see that the thermostat is cutting in and out by measuring the current draw. (I,m an electrician). I have also checked the water temperature and found that it is pretty close to the 40 degree lower setting and 60 degree setting. So i am sure it is not overheating and working pretty normally. Just put up with the smell which is not as bad as it was as it gets more use.

I also had the same problem, had the boiler serviced dealer said there was no problem. Three weeks later I took the top cover off and found that the fan assembly had disintegrated at the top, foam insulation was badly singed and top cover had fallen apart. Replaced all at a cost of ÂŁ150 seems to be OK at the moment.
