Where/ how do you store shoes?

We have a Hymer B644, our second, and the problem of shoe storage just gets worse as the children (and so their shoes) get bigger. Muddy wellie/ walking boots go in the boot OK. But we still have at least trainers/ sandals for everyone plus beach/ swimming/ shower shoes. There's a rack next to the door but is seriously useless - it won't even fit 1 pair of Damchief's shoes. There's a bit of room behind the driver's seat (we're LH drive) but there are two leisure batteries and the inverter there so I daren't cram too much on there. They end up stacked next to the door, tripping everyone up and dragging more mud in on people's socks. With #3 child now on the verge of walking, I despair!

Obviously we're not an alko chassis 'else they would be in there by now. No room in the wardrobe - full of nappies, bath seat etc. - plus not overly practical. And no, I am not Imelda Marcos - I have 3 pairs with me tops, two of which are flip flops.

has anyone with a similar van found a solution?

Everyone in our family has a pair of crocs.I bought a piece of that plastic carpet protect stuff and place that outside the van for dry removal of shoes etc under the awning.Crocs are left under the van at night. We limit our shoes and tend to take trainers type walking boots for most occasions and sandals. We used to keep them all in a huge waterproof trunk that you could also leave outside, then chuck in the back of the car but we did have a pickup then!In the winter,we have walking boots but again are left under the van to air dry.
Have you thought of those P.E. bags/swim bags for each person's shoes.Waterproof(and cheap) and could be hung up from a hook as opposed to lying around on the floor/bottom of the wardrobe.Alternatively, make some that co-ordinate with the van interior. These are great for underwear/nappies and other small people stuff too.We have a garage in our van(which we really could not do without.)OH has tie wrapped two sets of those clear drawers in there so everyone has a drawer each leaving the main van tidy.I hang loads of bags in there from the laundry to the dog's feed. The zipped clear bags that new quilts come in are great for wellies too.Print off a sticker for each family member, stick it on and you've got a cheap and easy welly bag. :D

Hi Damchief and Rraf!

I try to instill a ground-rule that the floor area in the MH must be clear to avoid trips and resultant injury.

Further, by putting a very wirey carpet runner outside the MH door, visitors have the opportunity to wipe their feet before entry. If it's dry outside, visitor shoes might stay outside. However, if it's wet or muddy, footwear has to be cleaned before entry, then removed upon entry. And where does the footwear get put then?

To that end, shoes, boots, flip-flops, slippers... all have to have a designated 'home'. So far, the following solutions apply:

Shoes which are used frequently might have their own little cupboard. Or they go in a plastic stacking box which fits under the bed. Clean shoes can sit neatly on the bottom shelf of the wardrobe. Two pairs of shoes fit under the plastic Betterware step/stool.

Outdoor shoes/boots can also have a box in an outside storage area. Or they can just spend their time under the MH, out of the rain and/or snow!

Two other ideas that I have seen and considered are:

1. A hanging sheet of material with sown-on pockets into which shoes could be fitted. I saw this idea fitted to the inside of a habitation door. It looked a very efficient use of 'dead' space.

2. Taking the idea from our airing cupboard at home, I fitted some slats above the combi-boiler that we have under our MH bed. We can keep many things on the slats, to dry or to air, ensuring that the air is free to circulate. Many items of footwear seem to find their way on to the slats!!

We use a large plastic supermarket basket which lives in the garage stuffed to the gunwales with all sorts, boots, clogs ( not crocs) deck shoes and as OH likes to call them " cross your leg shoes". Works for us but we no have kids with us

Muddy wellies go in the hab. door foot well and then, when we get anywhere, upside down on 4 wooden poles hammered into the grass by the steps outside ( a la Boy Scouts).

Van slippers are compulsory in the van in winter. No boots or shoes inside.

All the rest of our shoes hang up behind the wardrobe door on one of these:

The Adria Compact has a locker on the right as you enter, just above the doorstep. It's really the space below the wardrobe.

We keep about 4 or 5 pairs of shoes in there plus dustpan and brush and plastic bottle of clothes washing liquid.

Any damp/muddy shoes/boots go under the van or if we're on the road in a bucket or washing bowl in the garage. Walking boots are kept in the garage anyway as they'd take up the locker on their own.

We've got >> these << boot bags from Go Outdoors - ÂŁ3 each, a bargain. Boots go in these, under the bed / rear locker. Wellies in the side locker for travelling. Slippers, trainers and sandals in either the bottom or the top of the wardrobe.

On site, most shoes stay in the sidey-tenty-awning thing, which we always seem to put up as long as we're staying more than a day.

Chrisjrv your cat avatar is gorgeous!

We keep our shoes in a convenient step that opens up to our fixed rear bed. Wellies live in the garage but must admit its a pain so usually send Imelda out to get them and then we put them on as we step outside. The Hymer had a dedicated welly drawer outside which was great - I don't like creepy crawlies getting in mine so they have to be thoroughly checked beforehand.

Slippers are compulsory in winter inside defo. Only annoying ones are 16 year old sons ships we constantly trip over them but he slept in them once so we just put up with it!

some great suggestions here to a problem I've never really sorted, I'm always nagging everyone! Best solution I've found is one of those fold-flat plastic storage boxes, wich lives under the van in good weather, or if it's raining I can just get it between and in front of the van seats. But invariably it's me slinging them in there, after moaning!

Some absolutely fab ideas there - thank you everyone (and sorry for delay in replying, packing for off tomorrow!).

Am considering each one in turn - I think my problem is lack of space per se really.

Although we might start leaving more outside (I don't know why we haven't before - there's nothing posh amongst them!), I am wondering about the idea of handing something on the habitation door, which definitely is dead space in the Hymer - I haven't seen one like the picture though, where was it from?

Can't put anything between or under the passenger seat because it swivels and doesn't swivel with half a ton of shoes under it! And have to be able to climb between seats - although there is a drivers door. The wardrobe has absolutely no room left. We have rear lounge and dinette, so no under bed storage at all. Although the back is permenantly made up at the mo' - play pen by day, bed by night - and that space already has toys and nappies in it! No garage, just boot - completely full with pram, ride-on toy, chairs, tables, BBQ, racquets and umpteen outdoor toys.

We just have a pull-out awning so no options there.

You've made me feel not-alone anyway, so thanks again.

I will ponder this whilst we're away - Vendee.

This is the cheapo version and came from a poundshop but is still staggering on !

Smarter versions are available in places like Homebase / Lakeland / Argos and so on and are available in canvas too. This one is practical as it is all wipe clean plastic.

eg this one at ÂŁ6.79 from Argos

That looks good. But I wonder how to hang it from the habitation door? There's an insect twirly thing (we call them snakes!) - wonder if there's somewhere to fix it there.
